I got a response back from mel about buying the new style ladders. He said they should be available by the end of april for those who are interested. Anyone up for a group buy if he gives us a deal?

If it proves to be an upgrade from the existing one and won't be too much work to mod for use then I'm in!

I gave mine a go this last weekend, I slept in it 2 of the 3 nights, The one night was due to possible heavy rain and I didnt want me 3yo to get too cold, I have been quite happy with ours, It was funny to see how much they differ in equipment, There was another guy (LexusBen) on the run as well, His was completely different, Color, material, cover...etc.
We did one easier trail with alot of tree/shrub scratching, the other was rated a 3+ but I would think it could have been a 4 rated, The tent held up well throughout I didnt notice any bending, I have had the whople family in ours(2 adults, 2 Kids) while on the roof, The only thing I would possibly offer as advice is to have your head/upper body farther away from the folded out section, But if your ladder broke, Well I dont know what to say, My setup is atleast 6'3" off the ground, But I only weigh 170lbs ;)
Good luck

I got one of the first in the group buy from Mel. Used it for the first time at Roundup 1.5 weeks ago. The first night, I noticed it was bending. Second night, it broke as I was getting up into it. Not happy. My family slept in the car that night.

Dave G was also breaking his in that weekend on his M101 trailer. The difference between his and mine was that his tent was about 4.5 feet off the ground, not stretching the ladder. Mine was on my BJ70, which has a lift and sits on 33's. It was about 6.5 feet high, as I could walk underneath it and I'm 6'3". There was more pressure on a smaller piece of the ladder, unlike Dave's, where his was spread out.

I am going to take pics and send an email to Mel and try to get an upgraded ladder. I am almost positive Mel will make right in this. I'll keep ya posted on what happens.

I guess I've been lucky so far with my ladder...I'm tipping the scales at just beyond 300lbs...BUT...

...BUT...I have the ladder set up so it's 90 degrees. Straight vertical. Anything but that and there's way too much flex in the ladder for me to be comfortable using it.

The ladder sucks in construction and strength. Hopefully the new ladder is easier to set up and MUCH stronger.

If it is, count me in on a group buy.

I took mine out this last weekend. We slept in it all 3 nights. Me and my two girls. One night it rained fairly hard and we stayed dry:cool: . The ladder flexes a little but haven't had any problems with it yet. The mounting system I came up with worked much better. Didn't move after two days of wheeling. Still no regrets with this thing. Nice being up off the ground when it's all wet.

I'm in on the ladder buy if it comes up.

Yeah, i've used mine on two trips so far. That's 4 nights total. So far the ladder is doing fine on mine. But like Doug said, i have mine vertical.. straight up and down. I've never once had mine at angle. Im 250lbs and if i had it at a angle i think id' break the damn thing.

If there is a group buy for a stronger newer version i'd be in too..

There are pics of us using the tent in my signature just 4 days ago.

I am in on a ladder by if it proves to be worth the money and shipping. Let me know.

Rezarf <><

I'm in for a ladder as well ..... and I think we should be given a decent deal as the ladder that came with these are a joke, even for the low price.

Never seen a 60 rack in person but dont think it'll work from the looks of the rack. I just wouldnt feel safe with a rack mounted to the sheet metal if I was concerned with denting in the roof.

I know this is reviving an old thread, but I got back from camping at Big Bend National Park last week with my restored M101 and the Mombasa. I have to say that this tent was awesome. It made the trip easier and more enjoyable, and I slept like a baby every night. It was my first real trail run with the tent.

It was VERY windy the last night we were down there. The only thing that I would do differently would be to use the tie-downs that come with the Mombasa, as the rainfly flaps around a good bit.

Overall, this thing is a 9 out of 10 for the price. Here are some pics...

Very slick, I cant wait to try ours out in better weather.
The pic with it open on the trailer, It looks a bit crooked?!? was there an issue?

The cotter pins for mounting the tent are smaller in diameter than the holes in the brackets they go in, so there is some play which makes it lean when empty like that. It levels out when you are in the tent, though, so I wasn't too worried about it...

I used my Mombasa for the first time a few weeks back. Very happy with it.

Roof top tent ladders: I happen to have two extra, long, steel Maggiolinia ladders, well loved, but still have a useful life in front of them. They work fine on top of a 60/OME/35's. I can bring them with to Moab. Contact me direct. Bob

Have any pics? I checked MikeS's page at he as the steel ones for $69 and the alloys for $139 IIRC. I sure wish I was going to Moab this year.

that ladder looks stretched to the max. I should be trying mine out soon!
Ya know, I really didn't pay much attention to how far it actually came out. I believe it has more extension though.

I may mount a couple of handles just inside the tent to make exit and entry a little more friendly. Kinda steep.
