Replacing rear axle seal, what else should be replaced?

Hello all,

While diagnosing an ABS/VSC TRAC/VSC OFF/BRAKE error, I found the passenger side rear axle was leaking. I removed the ABS sensor and found the sensor coated in diff oil so I need to plan an axle reseal job. In searching for solutions, I found Timmy the Toolman's video on replacement and he lists all the parts needed to properly reseal the rear axle. Are ALL of these items required for a reseal, or is it a matter of replacing "while you're in there"? The parts are:

Is there anything else that I would need, or are there any of the above parts that are not likely to be used?

On a side note, the total price via one of the Online dealers, along with the current 15% discount, is $529, no tax, free shipping. The Impex cost is $269 + shipping/tariff/duties/etc. I might roll the dice with Impex again...

Not sure if the bearing is bad or not, but there was significant oil on the ABS tone ring and speed sensor. There was enough to cause the ABS/TRAC/BRAKE errors.

Is it OK to just replace the seal, or is that a bad idea on a 20 year old truck with 180k miles?
 
Just replace the bearing and call it done, bearings will fail at some point. I hate to see you posting again for a bad bearing after all that work.
 
If you haven't tried Amayama I suggest giving them a look. They will have you upfront pay the tariff/import costs. I've had no issues with needing to pay extra from them. As said though if you're going to be that far into it you might as well consider replacing the bearing.

Quick question. Realistically how quickly do I need to get the seal replaced? I know it's not ideal, and I'll need to ensure the fluid is topped off, but if I intend to replace EVERYTHING anyway, is it OK to run with a leaking axle seal for a month or so while I get the parts and time to do the full repair? Or is this a "stop driving" type of issue and I should just focus on the seal right away and do the bearing later?
 
The seal is likely worn because of the bearing. So doing only the seal means it will fail again. The gear oil will coat the parking brake and may impact the regular brakes on that side. I’ll let you decide how you feel about that.

I drove mine for a few weeks when I found the leak until I could get the parts, attempt to fix it myself, and subsequently give up and send it to a shop for them to knock out.

That's kind of where I'm at. I want to do it myself, but life might get in the way so I might outsource it. Either way it'll be a few weeks so I was going to proactively replace the rear parking shoes. They are only ~$20 per side.

Do you recall the cost to have the bearings and seals replaced? I'm assuming you did labor only, right?
 
If you replace the seal as a temp placeholder you can likely just clean the brake pads with brake clean. A local Toyota dealer agreed to do the job with my supplied parts and just cleaned my pads so I didn't need to replace them. Found the receipt from 2021, it was $420 in CA for reference.

Was that for both sides, or just one?
