I have an 87 turbo 4rumner w/ 22rte with auto.... how much work would go into doing a transmission swap, a 5sp for the auto? Can I find a wrecked or rusted out85-89 4runner or truck and take the xfer and 5sp w/ clutch hardware...? Anybody done a swap on here?

i beleive you will need to find the trans from a turbo truck, r-150 or something like that, then you will need to get the pedal bracket...

a donor truck that has a 5speed would be nice for all the little s*** you will need!

Jerod, how tough of a swap is it?

i have not done it, but i have stripped a few trucks, and well my guess is it will be time consuming, i do not think it will be that hard just time consuming, and it will be best to have the 5speed truck there, to get all the little things you will need off of.

sorry i did not mean to step on jerod's toes.

Not too hard, but you'll need clutch master cylinder, clutch pedal, clutch lines, slave cylinder, Trans/T-case, cross member, maybe drive shafts as well...

Easiest to find a whole truck in a junk yard to get it all off of....

May need some modification of the floor to fit the shifters.

Crossmember and driveshafts are the same. This is according to Bud (BudBuilt).

You'll also need a flywheel and a clutch, and shifters. Boots for the shifters that screw to the floor.

My buddy Mike (FoxFab on here) has done a bunch of them, it's easier than you'd think. He generally cuts the section out of the floor from the donor truck and grafts it into the floor of the swap truck.

Don't forget to ground out the wire from the old tranny for the Neutral start switch.

@KLF, yes, crossmember and driveshafts are the same..

Found that one out last week, really nice, same as it was for my swap. :D As for taking a "template" from the donor rig, hee-hee, same trick here too. made it so simple it was actually fun.

For grounding out the neutral safety consider like we do, cut them right at the back of the connector (because face it, are you really ever going back to want to using an auto anyhow after throwing in the pedal assembly, clutch master, etc  ?) and solder in and shrink-seal about another 6' of wiring the same color code. Then carefully before you put the manual trans in, fish thos lines back out of the harness and into the cab/ecu area. Then all you have to do is run them along the main harness back over to the driver's side and into the clutch neutral switch at the pedal assembly. That way you actually keep the function, of course minus the neutral safety switch over-ride button.

You'll also need the backup switch wires and might even want to grab all the relevant connectors for the body to trans/clutch switch etc to keep it all near-factory appearing and easier to diagnose if something goes odd at some point.

22R engine = G52 trans

All 5 speeds, all good transmissions.

Yes, but terrible ratio spread!

1st and 2nd are too close, and 3rd to 1:1 is a big gap... And hardly no noticeable drop from 4th to 5th (But that's most R era O.D's)...

And not real "heavy duty"

Heel-toe is your friend with this transmission...

Lots of complaints about this box come from the syncro's.

Rev-match on the down shift.

I've done the swap, not bad at all if your handy with a wrench. I had 2 built runners, one had a better body and I was selling the other. Of course the auto had the better body. I decided a body swap was more work than a driveline swap.
Get a donor, will have everything you need.
I had to swap out the wiring harness, massage the tranny tunnel for the sticks (double T Case) and IIRC drill for the master cylinder or take off a block off plate. My clutch pedal bolted right in.
I'll try and get some pics Monday of under the hood and firewall for you.
