Get the factory emmisions manual, it helps alot. I just completed desmogging my '84 FJ60 and it's never run better. I'm in FL, so I sent the dizzy and carb off to JimC to be rebuilt/recurved and followed the diagrams in the Tech section. Off the top of my head, this is what I did.
Junk removed:
smog pump
injection rail
gobs o vacuum lines
exhaust manifold
EGR crud
air manifold piping chunk
lots of stuff I can't remember
Junk installed/replaced:
idle pulley (JimC) in place of smog pump
SOR 2-pc header (don't buy thier y-pipe, doesn't fit)
injection rail holes plugged in the head
stock carb (tuned and plugged appropriately by JimC)
EGR inlet welded up
Thats all I can remember right now. I've been driving it for a week or so and it runs great. Cranks on the first starter hit, idles perfect, and has 18 in-Hg @ 700 rpms. I had EGR issues, intake manifold leaks, lots of tubing leaks, and mysterious carb problems. Put your header on with a thick gasket and copper RTV and it won't leak. Oh yea, I kept the cat on mine.
