Any ideas on install costs by a good shop?

You would save alot by pulling the third member yourself and taking it some where. You should plan on spending $2-3 hundred for each for front and rear for someone to setup. Here is IPOR's site.

Complete Re-Gear packages:

  • front gear set
  • rear gear set
  • two master install kits
  • Your choice of gear ratio: 4.56, 4.88, 5.29
  • Free shipping on complete gear packages
Early - 1990 Land Cruiser - $649
1991-1997 FJ80 Land Cruiser - $699
1998-2007 UZJ100 Land Cruiser - $749

This seem like the way to go.

X2 on ZUK, I needed some info when I set up my 5:29's and sent him a email. He responded very quick and helped me out a ton.

 to ZUK

Got it on the ZUK, They are local for me.

4.56 or 4.88???

I'm looking at re-gearing my '96 FZJ80 as well. I'm currently running BFG AT 295/75/R16's (33.2"). I'm a bit torn between 4.88 and 4.56...leaning toward 4.88. My rig does a lot of runs up to Mammoth from LA, and a lot of dirt road surf chasing in Baja, so freeway miles more than rock crawling. Fiveo what ratio did you go with?

Mine is stock geared and after I switched to 33's I haven't noticed any difference on the highway. Off road is a different story, it is an improvement! IMHO, I would not bother in re gearing.

^^^on straight out flats she goes great, but driving from sea level to 8 or 9k feet is a different story.

gears.

4.56 would be the most common match for this size, but I'd do 4.88, you'll be perfectly fine for highway use. There is only about a 6% difference in RPM between 4.56 & 4.88, which is very small, roghly 150 rpm at highway speed.

Thanks ringpinion - yeah I'm hoping for a bit more grunt on freeway climbs up to Mammoth etc, but it's nice to be able to cruise at 80mph when possible. If the rpms with 33"'s on 4.88 at 80mph are considered acceptable I'll go 4.88.

Is there a clear consensus on an optimal gear ratio for 33s & 35s on supercharged trucks - balancing highway and off road trails (not rock crawling)? BigMac

can we get an update from some 3FE owners running the 4.88 and 33s setup. How has everything held up after XXXX miles?

Also, how many hours labor should I expect to be charged if I disassemble 3rd member? Guessing the total cost of this job has gone up a few hundred bucks since 09'...anyone done this recently?

I will be doing mine in about a couple weeks or so, 4.88 gear, rear ARB locker, and rebuild front knuckle/axle, will report back after.

Do you still have your 1992 land cruiser with 33s? I just bought the same tires for mine and I am wondering how it drives.

I have had my 91 on stock tires, 33s, 35s and now 37s. 33s will not make a difference on stock gearing.

thanks! I was worried I made a mistake. I do a lot of soft sand beach driving and need the extra clearance but don't want to lift it too much. or loose a whole bunch of power.
