I hope for your sake that you don't need to replace your camshaft.

I would highly doubt that you can find a new one, but there are plenty of regrinds out there.

I had a 2 month setback on my rebuild trying to find a new cam and ended up getting my hands on what the parts guy for Toyota in California said was the last new 2H cam in the States. Still haven't cranked it up yet, but will be putting a thread up on it here when the times comes.

2H cams are around, but you gotta dig around the web.

Good luck with it.

pros and con of balancing a 12ht

i am getting the pros and cons of balancing my engine and i just want to get your opinions. here is what i been told so far. it will cost less than 200. dollars to get everything balance, so cost is not the issue.

Cons:
1. it is not necessary to balance this engine because it is running on low RPM
2. yes a balanced engine will run smoother but grinding the crankshaft, pistons etc, will compromise the integrity of those parts, and because you are running on low rpm you will not notice the difference.
3. waste of money
4. it will not add to the power of the engine

pros;
1. your engine will run smoother and maybe quitter

what do you think? balance the engine or not :meh:

Unless your going to try to break the land speed record I wouldn't do it. The engine is a low rpm tractor engine making it perfect the way it is.

I don't get the integrity part, as far as I know there's no grinding done on mating surfaces, only on counterwheights, inside piston heads etc. Therefore no loss of integrity.
IMOP it's a good idea and I plan on doing it to get a smoother idle and less bearing wear, wether or not it will do the latter is uncertain, but it will not harm!

I have a friend who had his 2B balanced and it made a world of difference, now he can use in the mirrors at idle! ;)

IMO balancing the engine is one of those things that never hurt but arent really necessary either... but again, if one has time, skill and interest to do i dont see why not..

Paso Robles, California

well my engine is getting rebuild but not in Los Angeles, Paso Robles, California instead. it broke down on my way back from a trip. here is the link if you want to see picture of cylinder. it turn out that the mysterious tapping noise was metal on top of the #2 piston, maybe the upper piston ring. we will find out for sure when we remove the piston.

12ht performance camshaft

since i am rebuilding my engine i have to find out if anyone out there has installed a performance camshaft on a 12ht. if yes, what have you done to it? what are the result?

If you want a performance cam you're probably going to pay more for it than the engine is worth, unless someone can chime in with a company that makes em somewhat affordable....or you could find a new 2H one for $200 bucks, direct from Toyota. 12HT cams are not in production, from what I've found.

But if you HAVE to have one, go here: JUN AUTO WEB SITE

send your inquiry to Mr. Tanaka

i have send inquiry to Mr Tanaka. here is another company i am talking to. Colt Cams - Camshaft Profiles

hot rod 12H-t

I am def not a diesel expert but I am pondering the value of a perf cam in a diesel

wouldnt you get the same effect by upping the boost, intercooling, and boosting fuel and building the engine stock? Maybe bigger valves?

or (insert evil grin) more than 1 turbo?
(wikepedia) The EB110 runs 4 turbos on a 3.5 litre V12 engine, producing 542 hp (404 kW) at 8000 rpm

The diesels I grew up around had 18 Wheels behind them---I am just theorizing as I have no firsthand experience

with the balancing as long as the cuts are the right radius, not too much material removed, and properly smoothed out it might actually make the part stronger as polishing or bead blasting does by removing imperfections (stress risers).

like I said though, I am not a diesel expert just seems not the usual route for diesel power so I am curious

I wouldn't go performance cam but thats your decision.

Try these guyshttp://www.tighecams.com.au/

or wadecams,both in oz.

pls say more, i dropped of my engine today to get rebuild. i am pretty clear on almost everything i am gonna do except this one. i am still trying to make this decision. the engine rebuilder said that unless i am sure of the result like a dyno i should not do it. i send email to tighecams.com they said they have done them and will increase power in the low end and mid range so i am asking for dyno result. i will look into wadecams.... thanks

If it delivers more low down power etc then yes, also if they have done them before then yeah,i'd be worried about getting some mob to do one and it totally fxxxs up the power curve etc.
Standard they run well.
If they have experience with the 12ht cam and adds low mid power i say yeah, let us know how u go,mine will need a rebuild the next couple of years.

i spoke to the owner of tighe cams on the phone tonite he told me that he grinds about one 12ht cam every month, he has no dyno result but the customers give him positive feed back. he said it will increase power on the low end and mid. again no dyno, just happy customers. he will find a camshaft core in Australia grind it then send them to me, he will work on the lifters as well. does anyone has experience with tighecams? thanks

Tighe Cams, brisbane, camshafts, automotive, Motorcycle, diesel, semi finished they grind one camshaft a month for a 12ht, can someone share your experience with your grind camshaft from tighecams? with that many camshaft being grind there has to be someone out there with experience.
