Well it's been 5 years since I took it down to the frame & I am now starting to but it back together. I just hope I remember where all the parts go. I swear at the time I was thinking it would be obvious but now I am having my doubts.

My daughter is going to be working with me, I may be posting a lot of pictures asking for part ID's

We have sand blaster the frame, springs, steering gear box, and axles and painted with chassis saver. So the frame springs, axle and steering linkage is first on the list.

From watching some others I gather that mounting the engine and transmission is next. The engine is out of a 77 fj55 so I think the front MM are the same but the rear MM are 40/45 specific, so if any one has a couple laying around I need both the MM and the frame MM. It had a Chevy 283 in it when I bought it.

I will try to get my daughter to post some pic's of our progress

Sound like a nice truck you're building up. My best advice is to buy a Toyota Engine manual, Body and Chassis manual and try and find a toyota parts manual. I got lucky and brought the lot from a deceased estate on ebay and most have never been opened.
Good Luck with the build and don't hesitate to ask for help.

As ozcrusier said look for the genuine Toyota manuals or just ask you fellow Mudd members. lots of good information to be found. One good free place on the web on parts is:

http://www.toyodiy.com/

I used this for most all my 45 parts reference when building. I like it as it has the different world models with correct part numbers. Just sign up on the site and your good to go. Some numbers maybe supper seceded but that is posted on the net when searching for the part.
Good luck looking forward to the build.

Well as a start I have the factory 2-F, body & chassis book from the 1980's & I have the SOR reprint of the chassis & body from the early 1960's, the haynes book & the Ludel book. I was lucky to get these bach in the 1980's when I had an fj40.

I hope to get the axles and steering hooked up this weekend. Then it is a matter of motor mounts and getting the engine set. I have a pto winch complete minus the gear for the four speed transfercase as well.

Any advise on the sequence of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Fantastic Father Son/Daughter builds are the best. Where are you located ? If you need anything post up nothing like seeing another 45 on the road. I would suggest getting the axles set and depending on what steering set up your using ( If Factory ) wait til you have the cab in place before you install the box

I am in Indiana, the pick-up camr from Montana. We I first go it it was in the 1990 right before Gulf war I. I did a rough sand of all the spot rust,(there was not a through hole anywhere) then had it cheap painted before I left.

There is a guy 300yds. down the road that has a '75 rusted out 40 sitting in his brush field. It's nice he lets me come down and take pictures and measurements. There are a few parts that would be of value to me but I think he thinks it has more value, than it does to me. I am just needing the motor mounts, PTO gear if there is one. The rest is nearly gone.

I believe I have the correct front frame MM to bolt in place, I will take pictures to see if anyone can confirm. The 2-F motor I have was out of a FJ55 and it has the front and rear engine motor mounts in place. I think I saw that the front engine MM are the same for the 40 & 55. If that is the case I think i just need the rear frame and engine/trannny MM, rubber fronts and donut rears. Damn it has been so long since I have worked with the landcrusier I almost seems foriegn.

From the pic of your frame, yours is a 1980 or older so the 55 engine mounts should be the same. In '81 Toyota changed the rear engine mounts to a transmission cradle and then it was similar to the FJ60.

the 55 rear donuts are an animal unto themselves; 40 donuts and brackets will work with the bellhousing just fine tho.

If you're working with a complete 55 power train, keep in mind that on the earlier 55s, the clutch fork and parking brake cable are both mounted opposite to the way they mount in a 40 or 45.

The 55 was a 1977.

I have the axles under the frame and the steering linkages all hooked up, I will try to some pics posted today. The front axle is out of my old 1977 fj40 & the rear is the oridiginal 1965, so I am sure to have some adaptive issues when it comes time for the drive shafts.

Does anyone have a 4 speed pto gear they want to sell?

Parking brake drums and pinion flanges are interchangeable up thru 77, so you're good whichever bolt pattern you want to go with. I personally wouldn't want to stay with the 8mm bolts [the originals for '65] on anything I drive a lot. I upgraded mine to the 10mm. I still prefer the pre-74 u-joints for flexibility, tho the 74 up u-joints[ with the 11mm bolts] are more durable.

p.s. I have PTO gears at the shop if you want to contact me there. 818-953-9230.

So will a 2-F out of a 1977 fj55 just bolt right up with the exception of I wiil need the drivers side engine/trany MM & frame MM. Will all of the rubber/donuts from the 55 work?
Does anyone have a pic of these MMs? with say a 6" ruler laying next to them, I think I can fab them up, if I cann't come up with one.

I hope to get the engine tranny in soon.

Thanks for all the help.
