Anyone ever try to modify a fj40 hatch to a 55??

I've seen homemade hatches, but never a 40.

My pig came with a home made hatch. It looks horrible and can only open when the gate is down. I am in the process of designing a hatch that would work like a camper on a pickup and lock into the gate and be able to open on its own. The other thing I am doing is trying to make it hinge in the middle and open like a solid garage door because the spare tire on the back will stop it from opening. I will post my design soon. I was going to model it in 3D but my skills just aren't good enough yet.

I've seen homemade hatches, but never a 40.

The outer edge to edge opening for a 55 is 44 1/2 x 16. The outside hatch for a 74 40 is 40 1/2 x 25. I have a line on a 40 series hatch that won't break the bank. If it's rust free I might play around a little bit with it.
