That’s unfortunate. Did you try it with a tire on it? Maybe the weight will bring it down?

If you’re not happy with it can you return it for a refund?

That was the initial thought: I don't know enough about physics. I went through the entire installation process to see if the tire weight would help, but it did not.

We're now five weeks in and outside the PayPal dispute window, and if I'm being honest, lugging or figuring out how to ship a 200-lb package back to them feels like way more work than I'm willing to take on. They literally messed up. I shouldn't have to endure the inconveniences of their failures.

An update because I don't want to be an unreasonable jerk who badmouths a vendor.

Sunk cost fallacy comes to mind. A few things that stood out in this experience:
  1. What I received was likely an already used product; it had signs of wear, and the finish was chipping away. I didn't catch it until a few weeks later when I finally unboxed the item. I experienced a series of confrontations that suggested I was responsible for their QC. Definitely didn't appreciate the undertone that I somehow damaged it.
  2. I don't feel like spending the time to remotely diagnose the issue for them, take pictures with "exact measurements" to attempt to maybe see if we can come close. I'm trying to get my project done so I can get back on the road and enjoy my rig, not help a vendor figure out their QC problem. They have enough resources to do that.
  3. The agreement is amicable, but now I'm just too annoyed to deal with someone's personality, so I'll take the hit and fix it myself. I appreciate the willingness to be helpful, but the experience and cost together have left me very disappointed. Maybe if I paid more, I might have gotten better attention.
  4. I ended up using a local resource to relocate the latch; the tig looks better than the original.
  5. I decided to powdercoat it myself, I have the equipment and means to do it, I'll just put my time to use to avoid the vendor. I don't particularly care if the finish looks off at this point.
  6. Disappointed all around, would have expected way more. Even when requesting a partial refund, I was met with a series of questions and confrontations. I definitely don't give a flying F about dealing with some person's hurt ego. Do better if you're gonna sell something.
  7. YMMV, but good lord. Anyway, I'm done with this/him/them, onward.

Update. Fixed. I also added rubber to the mount to ensure it doesn’t damaged the lower lift gate. Brian said “Oh wow that’s came out great!”
