The driver side carrier bearing retainer backed out creating all kinds of slop in the diff. which in turn ate my new 4:88's :frown: . I'm just hoping the guy that set my gears up will stand behind his work.

OOOOPS!!! I'd hope they stand behind it, that should not have backed out like that. If they don't, let's burn 'em here on mud.

Edit: Even if they do stand behind their work they will not replace the gears. So, that means you're out of pocket for the gears and then what do you do, take them back to the same shop?? dunno!

FYI--Justin at Offroad Outfitters will set them up for $150 w/ lifetime warranty on the install.

If there was a problem with the set up and it ruined my gears I can't for the life of me figure why they wouldn't be obligated to replace the gears and set up kit.
But if not the flamage will begin on Mud and Pirate. If it doesen't go my way I'll get the replacements and tools and do it myself. At least I'll only have myself to blame if something go's wrong. But I'll keep Justin in mind.

I hope I'm wrong but I've been down this road before. Maybe I just had a bad experience and these guys will actually come through for ya!

Most shops wont warranty customer parts, but in this case, the parts weren't faulty. I would talk to them and see what they say. Just don't get your hopes up.
I turned wrenches for over 10 years, Most shops I worked for stopped installing customer parts.

Ben,

You are more than welcome to do it at the shop if you end up needing to do it your self. I have everything that you will need to do it right and I will overlook your work just to double check if you are interested.

Also I would never reuse those gears. The pinion is in no way usable and they are generally a matched set. All they are good for now are paper weights. Get new gears and new bearings and start again from scratch. I am redoing a set of 5.29s in mini that just got killed from a horrible setup by a PO.

That is a strange way for a diff to come loose. But I guess there is a first time for everything.

Did the bearings eat it too? seems like all that slop would have created some flat spots too.

Well it went about like I thought it would he found no fault in his work and blamed the rebending of the keeper I said to reuse as the week spot in the set up which I can't fathom as the problem. So a little reading and a couple tool purchases and I'll give this a shot and see what's what.

Thanks Michael for the offer if I can't manage this I'll deffinatley take you up un your offer.

Rick,
I'll inspect the bearings and races. Being that less than 3K miles were on these gears I'm hoping there still usable but Im planning on buying a new set up kit with the gears.

Thanks ya'll.

I would go ahead and replace the bearings, wouldn't even spend much time checking them. There too many little pieces of metal floating around off the R&P.
