I have a 74 body that I'm working on putting on my 78 frame. I really like the look of the ambulance doors when the hard top is on, but I like the look of the barn doors when the hard top is off. I have seen the build threads for the rear ambulance half door modification, but all I have seen for the lower tub is the drop-down tailgate with this combo. I would rather stick with barn doors rather than a tailgate. Does anyone have any examples of the upper half ambulance doors with the lower barn doors? Thoughts?

I was actually having this exact same thought the other day. Since mine is a 72, which was (poorly) converted to ambulance doors, I'd like to reinstall barn doors, but also have the ambulance doors when the top is on. My idea consists of having the lower ambulance door hinge be the top barn door hinge, and when the barn doors are not on just capping the lower barn door hinge mounting holes with screws or plastic inserts. Will be following along with this.

@JohnnyC Thanks for finding that thread. It is helpful, but I think it's a bit different than what is being described above, where instead of a drop-down tailgate, the barn door function on the lower part is retained.

Well, as I laid awake this morning at 2 am thinking about my landcruiser (which happens all too much), it occured to me that my 74 body has the spare tire carrier on the passenger side and the ambulance door has the handle on the passenger side. What do you guys think--would there be space for the handle with the spare tire carrier on the same side? May have to go with a bumper mounted spare tire carrier, which I was leaning toward anyway.

I have a 72 with a 76 top. The tire carrier and the door handle are on the passenger side. PIA to always have to open the tire to open the door - some day I'll move the tire to the other side.

Yeah, I can see that being a pain. To confirm, you can still close the spare tire carrier even with the amublance door handle on passenger right? The ambulance door handle doesn't stick out far enought that it would keep the spare tire from being able to latch closed?

Yes it has worked since I got it in 1982. The PO did the (76) hardtop install as it was originally a rag top. He also made other mods and they are all still there. I think the tire carrier is the one it was it was born with.
