Hi guys- my son was coming home in the '85 4runner w/22re and the battery shorted on the hood. P.O. had a wing nut terminal sticking up too high. For some reason, the negative terminal melted down and the wire burned through. I cannot for the life of me find the other end of the wire or where the cable should ground to. Can I just ground a new negative cable to one of the big bolts holding the intake on? Anyone know where it should go?

Let's see, a dead short on a battery. How many CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is the battery? I bet two to three times that Amps went though that post and wire.

The ground wire heads down to a bolt on the frame on the passenger side of the engine, then on to a bolt on the side of the engine. The connection to the engine is very important for the ground return path for the ignition system, starter, etc.

Thank you for the fast response. After reading it, I went back out. The battery is 630 CCA. Removed the tin "skid plate" panel to see better. The only connection I see is a black ground wire with a yellow stripe from a bolt on the passenger motor mount to the passenger inner fender. Would that motor mount be an appropriate spot for the cable end? What's really weird is I can see no evidence of the rest of the cable or where it was attached.

Yep, as I remembered. It is bolted to the top side of the frame just in front of the lower a-arm suspension mount. It has a hard plastic shroud around it that provides it some support against flexing from vibrations. At least this is the case with a '94 pickup with a 22RE. The 4runner should be the same as Toyota doesn't change anything that doesn't need to be changed.

Cool- I'll hook it up there. Bogo- suspension is different on this with a solid front axle. THANK YOU!!! for the quick help. Love this forum.

The wire on my pickup is about 1/4" diameter with insulation. I think it was solid black,

All fixed and running like a top again, thanks!

Howdy! On my (just sold) 85, the inside of the hood had corrosion right above both battery terminals. I figured it was due to the PO leaving the spacer on the bottom of the battery so the OEM battery bracket would hold it down firmly. I dumped the spacer and used an aftermarket top bracket to keep it farther away from the hood. John

Go ahead and run an additonal 1 or 0 gauge ground to the frame. You'll thank me later.

Will do, thanks.
