hey all, I’m in Beatty, Nevada, about 300 miles from home and my alternator crapped out on me. No places have them in stock or can get them. Have called shops as far away as Vegas and they don’t have them and can’t get them either. Dealer is closed for the night.

Are there other alternators that i can use?

Do I have to have it towed home?

If you can make it to Big Pine, I have one you can use, 760-793-5112 (cell) call me if it will help. I am 2 1/2 hrs or 135 miles from your location.

The engine can run all day long on a fresh fully charged battery without any alternator connected. I've done it. So if you can get a new fully charged battery delivered to your truck you can drive home. If you're paranoid, buy two

Same thing happened to me in Big Bend a few years back. The Duralast 14340 will work with a slightly longer belt installed. Autozone was my only option where I was stranded. This is what got me home and I drove with it for another 6 months or so. You just have to swap pulleys.

Yep, it’s a little wonky, but it works.

Hi John: I sent him a text to try taping the alt. with a hammer, rock ect... to free up the brushes and it actually worked. He is making a run for home.

This is good info to know.

Awesome to hear about tapping the alternator. My experience with my 1982 60 was a bag regulator. Showed 12 to 10 to 8 volts until the battery died. New regulator and I'm back in business without shelling out money for a new alternator.

Thanks all! Was out of service much of the day, but as @2mountainfish said above, tapping the alt worked surprisingly well. Drove all 270 miles home with no issues. It cut the trip to Death Valley short by a day but overall I’m really lucky and grateful to be home without an enormous towing bill.

There will be other bills though- a few days on the trail certainly let’s you know where your truck needs work!

Was a super fun trip, the 60 is very capable and fun to wheel a bit. Just wish it didn’t have the issues that come with a 30+ year old truck.

Anyway, thanks again to all for the advice and input. This site saved my ass. Sorry I didn’t get to connect @2mountainfish , if I’m ever back that way I’ll stop in!

Thanks Tighe: I was really glad to be of assistance. Owning a 30 year old truck may have it's drawbacks, but being part of the Landcruiser community, makes it totally worth it. Nice rig, and keep up the good work, it will reward you with a truly awesome driving and ownership experience that you simply Can Not buy with a new vehicle. This recent trip of yours was a good example of that.:)
