BigBearCrawler: I'm a long time Mud lurker, but new member. Living in Charlotte, NC, most of my postings have been on NC4x4.com where I have a build thread of my 1970 FJ40 (mostly one tone Chevrolet components now). I am seriously considering posting mine up for sale as I am in grad school and my wife and I just bought a house that needs renovation. Unfortunately I don't take the time to drive it and someone needs to be enjoying it instead of it sitting in my garage as it has for the past several years. This may be right up your alley and within what you are looking to spend.

The quick rundown:
-1970 FJ40 RestoMod with hard top/doors and bestop soft top/doors
-5.3 LS (LM7) from 2000 Suburban with F-body oil pan with Improved Racing trap door baffle, Melling high volume oil pump (unknown mileage, but bearings looked good when I swapped the oil pan.)
-NV4500: rebuilt when installed
-Atlas 2 transfer case 4.3:1 low; disc pinion brake for parking brake
-Dana 60 Front, open carrier, 14 bolt full floater rear, detroit locker (CUCV axles 4.56 ratio) disc brakes F&R, GM power steering
-37x12.50R17 BF Goodrich KM2 (5 total) on 17" aluminum Spyderlock beadlocks
-Leaf sprung F&R with adjustable Rancho 9000 shocks
-Thoroughly triangulated cage and rock sliders by (PJ at M&M Offroad)
-2 Mastercraft suspension seats with 5 point harnesses
-VIAir onboard air compressor and air tank
-Warn 9500 lb winch with synthetic rope

-I bought the Cruiser in 2003-2004 from the daughter of the original owner (from what I was told) and it already had a V8 swap.
-The body is an 8/10. Has been frame off stripped down, sandblasted, and the frame has been powder coated, the body sprayed with epoxy primer. The body has a "decent" light blue rustoleum rattle can paint job currently, which looks good from 10 feet away:).
-Electrical is a Painless wiring harness.

Hey all - just letting you know that I took delivery of a 1974 with a 5.3L Vortec swap over the weekend. It was built by Bsquared and lovingly owned by DenverBlake. Here are a couple of pics from Blake - I'm still trying to decide whether to paint it. Mechanically it drives beautifully.

Sweet! Love it. God no! Don't paint it. Fix any spots to stop deterioration and preserve the rest. It took 40+ years to earn those stripes. Glad you ended up with a rig you are happy with!

This is just my opinion, but a FJ40 doesn't look as good with brand new shiny paint with a ton of gloss. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful with a great coat of paint, but they also look awesome with some good patina.
