by way of background, i am a few months post-LS swap. i have added several mods that tie into my electrical system including AMP steps, remote starter/locks, backup camera, new head unit and speed but gauges (my dakota digital cruise control is waiting to be wired in).

i feel like I’m chasing gremlins that are prepared to, at least in large part, the 36 year old wiring that wasn’t swapped out when the LS was installed. specifically i know i have an issue in the driver’s door jam wiring that’s impacted my steps when opening that door as well as my driver’s window.

so, my question is….do i just continue to try to chase these down not being particularly proficient in electrical work or do i try to start from scratch as the case may be? and if the latter, how far have you all gone putting new wiring in short of a frame off resto?

thanks in advance!

I've done a full body-off chassis restoration on a BJ60 which included restoring all the factory wiring. I also added a rear fog light (required for import to Europe) and made my own relay-powered headlight wiring (for double square headlights).

I found it very satisfying to restore the wiring, replacing hardened wires, corroded terminals and broken connectors, and to have no extraneous wires floating around (aside from my front headlight circuit). It's a big job though and you'll need to invest in quality terminals and crimp tools to do a proper job. I stayed with Japanese OEM wire, conduit and even tape and am very happy with the results. I am no expert in electrics; in my opinion you only need to be tidy and organised to make a wiring harness.

Did you find Japanese manufactured wire with all the various color & stripe combinations so you could keep with the factory color coding? Or did you just use your own color scheme?

I'm currently scratch building a harness for my 40 but haven't bought wire yet.
