Currently have a 73 fj40 running a 70's gm 307 sbc. Radiator is definitely on its last legs and I am looking to replace it with a universal one, possibly aluminum, any suggestions as to what I should be running?

Get a champion stock replacement AL radiator.

The 2nd one down (3row) is what I've been saving up for my rock crawler build with a SBC and Its suppose to fit the stock radiator cradle/mount.

Has anyone ran the 3 core with success on their crawler projects or is the 4 row really needed? Maybe @Mace will chime back in. Its hot here in the summer and the stock radiator barely keeps it from boiling over when caught in a line of trucks moving slow down the trail.

I've never heard of the 4 core AL radiator being necessary. Every one I've dealt with are two core. Aluminum is a different beast than Copper radiators are. A 4 core copper rad is common. Aluminum 4 core radiators are not.

If you're chewing up a LOT of HP, then I'd go with the three core. For a 307 in Boise, a 2 core is fine.

Sorry to Hijack OP but thanks Mace. they have a built in trans cooler which is cool for people with automatics but I was hoping to use it as a power steering fluid cooler on my project which I'm planning on going hydro assist eventually on the sag setup.

I'd run the PS through a separate cooler if it were me. Saves hassle in the end.

Stock fj40 radiators are copper. Champion makes bolt in replacement aluminum rafiators.

I had a 2 core Champion radiator and for me it was a waste. Granted the SBC in my vehicle is too far forward, but....

Had plans to use the trans cooler, which I couldn't because the placement for the fittings were in the way of the fan blade. I had an OE radiator and the champion didn't fit quite the same (other issues) because the lower tank juts out an additional 1/2" or so.

After doing good research- on an AL radiator it isnt necessarily the number of cores, but the size of the tubing.

I ended up going way universal, which required fabrication and hose issues... but it's far bigger, has significantly larger tubing, is a cross-flow, and was about $10 more than the champion.

I've had the champion posted on CL for a few months now....

Speedway Chevy SBC/BBC Universal Aluminum Radiators
This is the one ive had in mind, as all the original brackets are long gone, im not too concerned with having to fab up some new mounting hardware
