gents. i'm doing night driving on two lane undivided and four lane undivided highway and need to revisit this.
hoping for some more guidance.
i now have the slee harness in.
i have 9011's in the HIGH BEAM (inner location). these seem fine.
but i have 9006 in the LOW BEAM (outer location) and i need to improve this.
i bought a pair of 9011's this week to put in here (did not check fitment) and someone convinced me to put 9012's in this low beam location.
does this sound right and if so can anyone help me with the modification required? i thought they were supposed to a direct fit but this does not seem to be the case. will 9012 fit in the outer low beam location and if so how?
THANKS

Post #4 should have convinced you six years ago to run 9011 in all 4 locations. I did this modification ten years ago and don’t remember exactly what trimming I did to the 9011 bulbs to make them fit but I can tell you I’m no rocket scientist and somehow I figured it out. @landcruiser3DP

EDIT: added pics of the 9012 modification. i used a modeling saw to trim the "upper tab". the two things worth pointing out is the bulbs themselves are not "handed" so the tabs are modified the same way on each. also the 9006 is sort of "opposite hand tabbed" from the 9012 after modification. so i think it looks like you modified it wrong but based in the diagram i think i did it right.

Be sure to rub your fingers all over the bulbs before you install them.

added pics of lights off, low beams and high beams on the street.
slee harness with 9011 (high beam - no modification) and 9012 (low beam - modified) is awesome.
two blocks away the low beams light up the street lights. high beams make them fully reflective.

Rough crowd today.

I've used Wally Marts 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a new/clean lint free cloth, there are also aerosol cans/bottles of 99% Isopropyl alcohol you can buy online. The Isopropyl alcohol is best IMO as it doesn't leave behind any residue that petroleum products contain ie: don't use brake cleaner, or even electronics cleaner which is designed for metal contacts, not for the glass of a halogen bulb which gets very hot.

(For anyone who doesn't already know this) good practice is to clean off the glass bulbs last thing before installing them without touching the glass again.

FWIW

hey. at first i thought this was about cleaning lenses which i have notes on and had planned to get to but mine look super clear so i skipped it. i'm not convinced i need to clean my bulbs but this is good to have here. thanks.
did you catch why Tools R Us recommended the extra o ring for 9011 and presumably 9012?
i guess sealing the lens is important to keep out dirt?
what was the deal you take off the old o-ring from the 9006's and put it on top of the one for the 9012's? or i didn't quite follow what he said? or i guess i realized i missed this step and need to go in and do it.

"Have done a bunch of 9011s in all holes, there are two considerations. The base of the high beam bulb is smaller, so we remove the o-ring from the old bulb and put it on the new one. The larger o-ring better centers the smaller bulb and improves sealing. The high beams have significantly shorter rated life, but at the price, I will take the increased output and replace them more often."
