I have looked and searched and I just finally decided to ask this very simple question that maybe many others that are not all knowing want to ask....but are afraid to in fear of getting multiple small blue dudes flipping them the double bird. So here goes....

My 55 has the date of 8-72 on the ID plate. I beleive it is considered a 72, but Toyota changed a few things starting in 9-72. So is mine a 71? An early 72? Or shall I always refer to it as a an Aug 72 pig?

Thanks for the clarification!:o

So is mine a 71?

Nope. Not a '71, not a '73. Back in the early days a production date meant something. Yours is an 8/72 only. Just for grins, look up the engine date and decode your carb date.

Pighead is right as usual!!

Later on a vehicle with an August production would be the last of that year or possibly a REAL EARLY model of the following year.

As Pighead says, ALWAYS refer to the month of production or give the VIN number to be sure.

Yup - during the 70s things changed pretty quickly due to all the new emissions laws going on a the time. My 40 is a '9/75 which is technically a '76 model due to the disk brakes etc. It still has some leftover stuff on it from the '75s though (different carb/long shaft water pump/booster and MC). You're prolly safe calling yours a '72, but the date does matter on parts as people have stated.

Well, I had to go 'round and 'round with my Ca DMV to get mine smogged...they thought a 12/'74 (like mine) was really a '75 model and wanted to smog me like a 2F. I had to show them my engine number and my smog manual to get them to see the light.

So a Dec.-71 40 would be considered a 71 or 72? I think it is titled as a 72.....

It's a '71...sometimes they were titled in the year they were first sold.
