I'm going to do a 4bt swap on my 69 FJ55. I am looking for 4BT's now and have found one mated with a Ford 5 speed manual and an Eaton 5 speed manual.

The Orion transfer case won't work with either transmission. Anyone have any suggestions on a transfer case that I can use with either of these transmissions or am I sol?

If neither of these will work, any suggestions on transmission and transfer case to put behind a 4bt would be much appreciated. I know I can go with a nv4500 and an orion, but 4bt>nv4500>orion is going to cost out the @55

Thanks
Rodney

Thanks scrapdaddy. I've posted on 4btswaps as well, but haven't had any feedback yet

isn't there an adapter to go from a 203 doubler box to a splitcase? (yes) I wonder if there is a way to get from the 4bt to the NP203 (not sure)...

I don't think the Ford or Eaton would mate to the 203.

Maybe sell the transmission and buy the NV4500, etc. Still expensive. I guess you really want the Orion?

No, I'd rather not have to spring for the Orion, I am just at a loss on how to go from a 4bt to the drive shafts. I think my options are:

Adapter>nv4500>Orion

Adapter>stock Toyota 3speed w/ TC (both of which will need a bit of work

Adapter>ford or gm tranny>203>doubler>205 (will the 205 connect to the 69 drive shafts without mod). This seems like the most complicated and expensive of the options, but I don't know.

Are there other options?

Is there a 69 Toyota 3 speed to 4bt adapter available out there? If not, the cost of a custom fabb'd adapter plus work on the stock transmission and transfer case may well make the nv4500 the most attractive option.

I'm definitely over my head here but have a good friend who will be helping me with all this work and is far more capable than I am. Any advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Go NV4500 to split case from a 60/62 for sure. Way stronger than the one piece cases, and quieter too!

NV4500 is not as car like as H55F, but can be found cheap these days, and have a much better OD ratio.

Advance adapters makes the adapter, and split cases are quite cheap and easily sourced.

I like that idea, though I'm less crazy about the $700 dollar price tag on the adapter kit. I've started looking for a split case. Hopefully it won't prove too elusive

I've located a complete 4bt for $toodamnmuch.00, as well as a nv4500 that came out from behind a 6bt so it should mate right up. Now I just need the split case.

Now I just need the split case.

Now is a really good time to solidify axle plans, as OE components for a split case ebrake are as rare as the dodo bird.

There are options if maintaining the OE 55 axles, like disc brake or line locks, but considering the planned usage, I'd advise either a FF40 or 70 rear axle with provisions for ebrake.

Both are available.....but on the left coast, so it'd be a pricey affair, but one I wish I had developed further, solely based on unavailability of OE TC drum brake components, with no intention of wheeling this Pig.

You might check with Jewel for a FF40 rear.

Yeah, I reconsidered and decided to take your advice and shop for axles, but I'm guessing you already know that based on your post in my other thread.

Tuffmudder,

The 4BT that you're looking at, that is the one with the ford tranny? Won't you need an adapter plate to bolt up the NV4500 stuff.

Very nice combination, I always wanted a 4BT in something, prolly my M37.

I vote for FJ60 axles, easy to get and easy to do.

The same guy with the ford 4bt combo will also sell a P pump 4bt in good running order without adapter or transmission, including starter shipped for $2700. That's a chunk but if I buy a cheap one they frequently don't sell the "peripherals" and once you rebuild it you end up north of 2 grand anyway.

I'm buying a nv4500 that came off a cummins so will bolt right up to the 4bt, then I'm going to get a 60 series split case and use the advanced adapters...adapter.

With adapter and ford, eaton or Alison tranny they run around $3200 I believe

And I've reconsidered and am now looking for some 60 axles in the fort smith, ar area

On a completely unrelated note, I'm now accepting paypal donations to pay for groceries and utilities

Yeah, we all gave up eating, just worried about lawyer's fees! :)

Kidding aside, keep it real and family first. I waited a long time, before I could spent some on my hobbies.
