would the front clip from an early solid axle pick up bolt in place of my 89' 4runner front clip? just a crazy idea...i like the look of those, and i know where one is in a junkyard...thanks...

whole front end, eh?
how much of the front end are we talkin here? i was thinking the two quarter panels, the hood, and the grille/rad support. are the body mounts the same? would it line up with the cab okay? i wish i could see for myself but the junkyard is a good two hours away, so i figured i'd save myself the trip by asking all you experts....

I think from the front of the doors to the grill is shorter on the 1st gens, so there would probably be much cutting and fabbing to get it to look good... You'd have to start with trimming the fender or door to line up nice and pretty. Then work forward from there... The whole front may be narrower on the 1st gens too.... It sounds like a big project to me.... 
It might be cool if it was integrated with the tube doors, frame mounted tubular steel fender flares and the fj40 bezel.
