I just read through this thread, great score on the turbo and the free 1HDT. Not to be the wet blanket but wasn't there a mention a ways back of some legal restrictions in your country that kept you from swapping in a 1HDT in place of your current 2H? Or was that only if you wanted to buy and import a 1HDT in rather than just found one for free already in country.

Actually you're exactly right! I haven't read through the thread, but as I recall Talos from Iceland voluteered to get a permission from Icelandic toyota. But I thought that it had to be from Danish Toyota. Well I spoke to a guy from the vehicle inspections here, and he said that he didn't care where the permit was from, but by that time I didn't have the deal on the 1HD-FTE any more. So I gave up on it mainly because of that, but also because of the cost and complications involved.

But having stumbled upon one for free makes me revisit the plans!

I have taken almost every bit of wiring out with the engine, gearbox, coolers, intercooler etc. so I might have a chance!

Hi All!

I have a HJ60, with 210.00 miles on it. This is the most common 60-series here...
The head is cracked and it is a bit on the low side HP-wise.
I know that there is a lot of Turbo converssions out there, I have one, but maybe it's time to retire the old war-horses and upgrade!

My question is:

What Diesel TOYOTA engine would be the best?

Considering following issues:

  1. Easyness of swap
  2. HP/Torque issues, would it be worth it/would it end up ripping my 5-speed and axles
  3. Mpg
  4. Prize
And maybe, would it run on veggie-oil

I know there is a lot of Cummins conversions, but as far as I have read, those engines are hard to come by in the US, which means impossible here!

I considered a Mercedes Diesel, 2.7CDI, but eventhough Germany is only 200 miles from here, it costs 6.000$ without wiring, EG ect!!

I hope the collective braintrust here have some input that might help me and others with engines that boasted massive 105HP and 196 ft/lbs...

Thanks, Christian

For Africa I would choose the 1HZ. Because it can run on the crappiest and most contaminated diesel without caring. How is the HD-T holding up?
