Thanks to all that replied to my original thread regarding two FJ80s I was looking at to purchase. I did purchase the 1994. 231K miles. Loaded with lockers too. Never been off road. Many repairs/mods upcoming. This is a great site! Many thanks in advance for all the help I'm going to need.

Welcome:flipoff2:

BTW Moonglow is the best color for the 80...because that is what I have:hillbilly:

I have three main repair issues to deal with thus far:

1) Rear locker only blinks. I'm not too worried about this after reading several threads here. I have driven it for a few minutes off road and I'm hoping the actuator will loosen on it's own. If not, I will remove and clean the assembly. Front locks in without issue.

2) There was no CEL when I purchased/test drove the vehicle. On the 300 mile trip home I ran Seafoam to clean the fuel system. Since then the CEL is on. I just received my FSM and EWD and I will trouble shoot. The engine runs smoothly and the car drives without issue. fluids are all normal too.

3) Play in steering. I did not find any badly worn steering/suspension components when I examined the car on a lift. I DID notice the upper U-joint on the steering column had a HUGE amount of play. I've checked some threads here and it look like the easiest this to do is pull the column and replace/repair the joint.

I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

PS: I had to leave town on business right after buying the cruiser, but not before I caught the $100 off sale at Discount Tire! I guess that 2.5" OME kit is next ;)

All three of my lockers did that crap for a week or two...once they loosened up they engage in a second or two...just keep playing with them:eek:

I hope/assume you are correct. There is no evidence this vehicle was ever taken off road before my ownership ;)
I am more concerned about the CEL. I need to get that fixed so I can get it smogged and registered. Maybe I fouled a O2 sensor with the fuel system cleaner... I have not had a chance to diagnose.

What code is your CEL throwing? Jump E1/TE1 with a paper clip and look up the code in your FSM.

Congrats on a beautiful white '94! I'm biased of course!!!

Agree with the advice to keep playing with the lockers. My fronts have always locked up before the rears.

I'm out of town right now. As soon as I get back I'll get the code.

I managed to find some time to work on the cruiser this weekend:

Replaced both front door checks. (Doors actually stay open now.)
Replaced filthy air filter.
Replaced PCV valve.
Removed aftermarket alarm.
Diagnosed rear diff locker. Rebuilt locker position switch.
Realigned rear hatch and replaced gas struts.
More maintenance items to follow.

Good Start... good luck.. plenty of resources here to answere any question..

I have to agree Moonglow is superior. White is a distant second, but I digress.

Don't forget to check the tuna can when changing the air filter.

I was following your previous thread, glad you went with the locked 94.

From noob to noob, welcome!

Tuna can?

I did some wheeling with my son today. He in is jeep XJ and me in the cruiser. We both can appreciate lockers now. ;)

Tuna can?

...

Small canister underneath the air filter canister, it's held on with 2 clips.

Part of a cyclonic pre-filtration system (heavy stuff goes around the outside, falls into the tuna can, lighter stuff gets caught by the filter, and happy air goes into the engine)

There have been some interesting things found in these.

Not a bad thing to check at every filter change. Some check them at every oil change for good measure.

Nice truck

Got it! I'll check it in the morning. Thanks.

How do you like the Falken tires looking at getting them in the 315 version?
Thanks

Great looking truck by the way. I had a white one and now green I think they are all great no matter what it's an 80!!

I have not mounted them yet. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

I like blue myself....nice truck

More time today to work on the Cruiser. I disassembled the dash today to install my CDL switch ;). While I was at it I checked all of the various dash bulbs and found several that were out. I also discovered a jumper in the socket that mates to the CDL switch. I will need to remove this when I install the switch. What is the purpose of this jumper? Do I need to do anything other than install the CDL switch to be able to engage the CDL at anytime? (NOTE: I created a separate thread for this question.)

Also remove the nonworking aftermarket alarm. What a PITA!
