I got questions! What puller do you guys use to pull the tcase off? I know I needed a puller the last time I pulled a tcase off but I dont remember what I used. (engine and trans were out of the fj40 last time though)

I am going to need to pull mine in the fj55. Its going to be tricky. I assume I can do it in the vehicle. Its a 1971 fj55 with a swapped in 2f and 4 speed.

anything I should look out for?

I can't remember either. I know in my 40 its way easier for me to pull the package - engine/tranny/transfer as one piece. Well maybe not easier to pull but far easier to install the unit.

Love my 6# lead hammers - they don't mar cast aluminium. Original dead blow hammers.

The puller pictured in the Haynes manual looks like the standard 3 jaw gear puller except there are tabs with holes for bolts instead of hooks to fit over gears. I'm thinking that you make holed tabs with slots for the hooks out of angle iron.

The picture from the Haynes manual shows a puller similar to the two that I have shown. You may be able to rent one from your local parts house or buy one off the net from OTC among others. Search hub puller. I have never personally used this tool for your reason.

Would think pulling the transfer case off would be easier in an FJ55. Unlike an FJ40 the torque tube behind the transfer case is further back giving better excess to a puller and room to slide the transfer case off the transmission tail shaft. With a four speed in my 68 FJ40 it would be impossible to do without removing the rear motor mount off the bellhousing and lowering the back of the engine down. Never pulled just the transfer case doing this but have pulled the transmission and transfer case together.

Have you asked this in the pig pen?
