I've got a BJ74 with 13B-T been sitting for a year as I get the body work sorted out. Started it up and drove it into the shop and the power steering is squealing away and the wheel is jerky. So a friend advised that it might just have air in it from sitting and to jack it up, work the wheel back and forth get the air out of the system.
What I'm wondering cause it never occurred to me before, does the power steering system need a flush occasionally? The fluid is old, been sitting for over a year, and I think that power steering fluid is similar to brake fluid in that it absorbs water over time and loses it's integrity??
This is one of those sort of overlooked issues so I'm looking for input. Thanks J

power steering runs on special oil, that needs to be changed from time to time.
easier if you lift the front axle so wheels are in the air. took me less than one hour on a LJ, followed the manual.

Jon, air probably got in there when the vehicle went horizontal before you owned it?

I flushed my PS fluid recently using a procedure here on mud. I think I used auto trans fluid in it (as was recommended). Worked very well. Let me know if you want more info. My old fluid was very worn out and dirty (probably original factory stuff....).

Cheers,
Nick

Followed the thread, the system was really low. I suspected a leak, but not sure after cleaning it
up that there is one. No more squealing so one more thing taken care of.
