So today Josh and I got the remains of the '95 loaded up, cleaned up behind the barn, and pulled the chassis out of the barn and parked it behind the barn. Now to clean up inside the barn and start work on the '93.

I find myself in a bit of a pickle. I had planned on starting the drive train removal of the '93 this weekend. Problem is I cannot get the seals and hoses that I plan to replace while it is out, at least without paying through the nose. OEM parts are much more reasonable ordered from overseas, even with the shipping.

So I think I will tackle what I have parts on hand for, namely the suspension and body lift. I guess I could refinish the step/sliders off of the '95 and get them welded on too.

I just ordered a few cooling system parts from Lagrange Toyota for a very reasonable price.

This truck is getting a 2" lift. All parts are second hand, hence the "interesting" combination. Front springs are TJM medium rate springs. Rears are Dobinson 2" long travel springs. Shocks are Fox units, kindly donated by @mingles.

First order of business is paint. All yellow, or all teal, I wouldn't care. But yellow up front, and teal out back was a little too much. So I dug around in the barn and found a couple cans of flat black. So flat black they will be.

So I spend the day swapping springs and shocks. 95% done, missing one nut on a front shock, and one rear lower shock bolt decided to stick while being put back together. Not sure what is going on there, it will run in and out a few turns, but then binds up hard. Ran out of steam to deal with it today. I am shocked that no bolts broke, and everything came apart without much trouble.

Definitely got the stink bug going, but hopefully the back will come down once I get the rear bumper built.

So speaking of bumpers, looks like the front bumper is next on the list, simply because I have a 7' piece of 6" x 8" tube sitting in the barn that was bought to be a bumper for a Willys Wagon project that never got off the ground.

I've been working on a design that I like, and this is largely based off of a picture I came across at some point. I thought it was a one off, but lo and behold, I see another 80 on mud with the same bumper today.

Tube work will be new to me, but the base will be straight forward. Going to be heavy though, the tube I have is 1/4"...

So tonight I did some clearancing so that I can actually drive it again. Entirely inside the front wheel wells. The tires I have are wide, a touch over 14", which exacerbates things.

Anyway, I did the same procedure when I got these tires fitted to the green 80, so this went mostly smoothly.

Started taking the spare transfer case apart last night. One of the case bolts broke off just under the head. Love living in the rust belt :bang:

This evening I hit the broke bolt with some heat and oil, but that did nothing. Ended up having to drill it. Fortunately the drill caught the bolt and spun it a bit, which broke the corrosion. So now it sits in a pile of parts on the bench. Hope to get to pressing things apart tomorrow. It is getting 3.1/1 low range gears, and resealed.

Pulled the drain plug on the trans yesterday, letting it sit until I get to it. Going to replace the solenoids, found a vender on Amazon selling OEM units for a steal. Hoping that takes care of the random shift issues I have had with it. If not, then this project is going to get a bit more involved.

What problems are you experiencing? Delay? Hard shift? Slipping?
 
Random stuff. Sometimes doesn't shift into 1st unless I pull the lever to 1. Sometimes no reverse. Had is skip shift from 1 to 3. Otherwise is shifts and drives fine.

When I drained the oil, it was obvious it has been awhile. So hopefully some fresh oil and new solenoids will do the trick, though from reading the harness plug can cause grief too.

I've contemplated swapping the '95 trans into this one, but that is a huge can of worms. I have all the parts and wiring harnesses, in the end I would be turning this OBD1 truck into an OBD2 truck.
 
Making good progress on the TC upgrades. Got the new gears pressed on, new seals in both output housings, and the little bit of grinding work necessary to fit the large LR gear.

Broke another bolt today taking off the front output housing. Heat was not enough to get either of the two broken bolts out, so on to the welded nut trick. That worked second try. So I hope to finish up the TC tomorrow.

The transfer case is back together. Need to install two more bolts to replace the two that snapped, which I will probably steal off of the '93 TC.

Also got the trans pan dropped and the new solenoids installed. Fortunately nothing alarming on the magnets, and the solenoids were a piece of cake to R&R. It took more time cleaning the 1/4" layer of caked on, baked on oil and sludge that was attached to the skid plate and oil pan. This truck has been leaking oil for a long time.

Ran out of steam today, so I will fill it with oil tomorrow and take it for a spin. Time will tell if the solenoids were my issue or not.

Received the longer bolts for the body lift last week, and I have a shipment of hoses due this week. I think I will take the truck to the local car wash and spend $10 trying to get as much oil off of the drive train as possible, then start the body lift. That will probably eat up the rest of this weeks vacation.
 
So a couple rides around town and the transmission seems to shift better. Since the shift issues were random, only more time and miles will truly tell the story.

Started tearing the truck apart to prep for the body lift. Got 7/10 of the body bolts apart, two fronts and one rear left to go. Also stripped the rear bumper and mud flaps, since they will not work as is with the body lift. Found some more rust in the quarters, which I cannot say surprised me. So I started taking care of that:

I plan on using sheet metal from the roof of the green truck to patch this up. A tiny bit of it will live on :lol:
