Monday I worked to button down the last of the crap that had to be re-installed. I also spent some quality time drilling out broken bolts and running a tap through weld nuts to clean the threads.

Tuesday I invited Rob back to help with the start up. We did a compression check (checked out fine) and did a valve lash adjust. We had some air in the fuel problems, primer pumps not working, loose injectors and so on, but in the end she ran. The turbo might have issues, but we'll run it and see how it performs.

Today was the day. I drove Silver out of the garage, she seems to be running pretty good. I haven't dicked around with the fuel on the IP, and I'm sure it'll need more fuel. Drove around the block a couple of times, filled her up with diesel and plan to take her to work tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Nope, 5 speed was to much of a challenge. I'll have to live with the auto (yuk) even though it seems to be pulling fine, as I start to fine tune the turbo it'll only get better.

The exhaust manifold in this truck is stock. It has a fairly heavy steel down pipe with the turbo attached to it. If someone was creative you could fab a DIY without much trouble. The custom exhaust collector would be a pain, but again doable. You can see in post #20 the entire turbo apparatus. Oh ya, Al purchased a brand new oil pan that was fitted with a bung for the oil return. Specialty Engineering also modified the oil feeder for the vacuum pump to feed the turbo.
Now that being said, I see the new turbo design puts the turbo above the manifold ala 13-BT. Saw some pics over on the diesel list.
And Kim... the turbo's in use :)

Shifting

Glad to hear you got it all together Phil. Looks like you had some good help. But I do agree with you on the Autos :bang:

Dan

Funny... after driving (Phil's) auto diesel wagon for almost 10 yrs I'm back to a 5 spd in my '89 FJ-150 and loving it. Meanwhile a good friend of mine has gone from 20 years of shifting in TOY pickups to a Tacoma with an auto and kicked butt on our last trip (think a factory rear locker had something to do with it).

One things for sure... the FJ-150 doesn't fit into as many places as the wagon did!

(You've been one busy guy Phil)

Great to see that truck up and running! Too bad about the auto....and the extra motor.
Have you been driving it?

Al's gonna be pretty disappointed if someone doesn't start giving him grief about his Ford...;-P

Geese PHIL I remember at my first or second C.C. meeting you said something like ( ugh AUTOMATICS are so DOMESTIC) I think they wheel so much better . I been off for awhile I am surprised that you havnt called me to turn some wrenches

I tried to get away from the auto, but apparently I was out of favour with the 5 speed gods. The motor/body differences between the auto and 5 speed were too much to deal with. I'm currently working on dropping the 2H/5 speed/t-case into a JDM frame, then throwing yet another HJ body on top of that. At least this body had a 5 speed in it so it shouldn't be as complicated. This one will be the trail truck.
I will have to admit that an auto is nice for the daily commute, and I'll keep this truck for this.
