Hey y'all, this is my first post here. I have a 93 pickup with the 22re, 4 inch suspension, 5.29 gears and 35's. My current problem is the motor starts fine and idles good but, as soon as you pat the gas it bogs down, makes a metal chattering noise and cuts off. There was also oil leaking around the front seal which lead me to believe I was low on compression but, I just performed a compression test and all cylinders were in between 130-140 with a cheap gauge. The cat is not stopped up and the PCV valve still rattles. Any idea on where to look next?

Check your valves

Boggs down? Sounds like it's starving for air. Mass airflow sensor, the tubing going to the throttle and your throttle position sensor. Check them all

timing chain...

This^^

Also check to make sure the throttle linkage is not bound up. The TPS and AFM will probably need to be tested with an ohm meter to rule that out.

x2 on checking the timing chain. Might just be a distractor but metal chattering noise may be broken timing chain guide and a jumped tooth on the gear. Easy enough to pull the valve cover and look. The only other thing I would check not mentioned above is your fuel rail pressure. Does it backfire out the tailpipe or intake?

Do the free stuff first. I would check for any codes in the ECU, then get a light and check the timing. Also make sure the TPS is properly calibrated. Check the pickup coil in the distributor, set the gap. Check the ignition coil. If that doesn't help, warm it up, then pull the valve cover and run the valve tappets, also look at the guides with a strong flashlight.

Check all the intake piping for cracks or leaks.

Prepare to replace the front seal. Might need a new balancer, they get a groove where the seal rides and won't stop leaking. Get an OEM seal.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! I pulled the throttle body yesterday and that had a lot of carbon build up! Pulled the TPS and IACV with it and also pulled the cold start injector because it was surging when warm. The cold start injector was filthy but the IACV was clear, hopefully I can check the resistance on the tps and check the timing today! Thanks again for all the ideas!

When you hear racket coming from a 22re, check the timing chain guides. Mine rattled for a few thousand miles before I changed the timing set, and I found that one of the guides was jammed between the chain and the oil pan. Another problem I had was caused by cheap gas. I noticed a sewing machine sound but when I got better gas it stopped. I had a performance problem that was caused by about a quarter inch of buildup in the throttle body. The engine idled rough and had no power but I took it off and did a good cleaning and everything runs like new. I also replaced all of the hoses. As a test, I duplicated your problem when I forgot to connect the MAF after changing the chain set and the truck would start and idle, but then bog down when I opened the throttle.
