Hey Guys,

Here's a dumb question, bare with me I'm not real good with this stuff. I've got a 1995 FJ80 and love it. For the past several months i've had trouble starting it. When I turn the key I get a single loud click from under the chassis. After turning the key anywhere from 10 to 20 times, it'll finally catch and fire right up. The battery is only a year old. It is a third vehicle and sometime sits weeks between cranking. Where should I start? Starter? All the starter problems i've had in the past have sounded different (multiple clicks) Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the starter or at least the starter contacts. Go to the 80's FAQ, in the maintenance section and look for starter contacts

Like Romer said; your starter or the contact ares going bad. I have the same problem, but I rather replace the whole thing. If you are not too mechanically "gifted":wrench:, go to NAPA, O'Reilys etc. and get one. To me replace the starter is :banana:. Replace the contacts: :banana::banana::banana:.

getting the starter out is the hard part. I thought the contacts were pretty easy and took about 15 minutes the first time. I thought it was a

Pictures are in the thread, you can be the judge.

make sure you disconnect the battery before taking the starter off, don't want a hot plug hanging around

Also, make sure you read the FAQ carefully. To remove the starter you need to get the two 17mm bolts (one facing front, and the other to the back), not the two 12mm long bolts on the starter which will only get out part of the starter - It seems to be a common mistake from what I read lately. Good luck.

Awesome, thanks guys. I'l give it a shot this weekend. Overall pretty handy with a wrench once I figure out what's going on, I just suck at diagnosing!
