Swap the V-8 from a lexus of the same era. I don't know the engine code. But, the LS400 had a very powerful V8 in it from the factory. Double the power of the cruiser I6.

You can pick up an ENTIRE LS400 for under $5k, use the engine and part the rest of it out.

1. 1993-97 FZJ80 = 212hp, 275ft*lbs torque
2. Double that power = 424hp, 550ft*lbs torque.
3. 1997 LS400 = 250hp, 270ft*lbs torque

Double the power of a FJ80 then? Or a FJ60 at least? .... jeez... I thought the FZJ's were more anemic than that.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how the factory long block supply system works? Did they keep the tooling and continue to make identical new motors, or are a total number sitting on a shelf in a state of preservation? Hey, my beer has a freshness date, what about an engine?

The 1FZFE has been put into the 105 (100 series) outside the US, up to at least last year, IIRC.

True this...Venezuela has the 1FZFE for their, gulp, 2005 FZJ80 series Cruisers.

But, when looking at the Toyota Gibraltar website, when you check out the wagon section, they note the model designation as FZJ105, but when you take a look at the jpeg of the motor, it definitely does not look like the 1FZFE engine.

Check it out:

Here's the pic of the 4.5L engine they are showing--notice the intake manifolds:

I think there have been some updates, such as direct ignition/coil packs for each cylinder (no distributor), etc...

The LS400 motor is tuned to provide silky smooth performance in a luxury sedan, probably not an ideal torque curve for a wheeler? It has an alloy block? A Tundra motor would probably be a better choice, but it would be a bunch of work for very little gain.
