Guys - I'm wondering if anyone has used a standard "off the shelf" light bar similar to the Pro Comp PreRunner style on their FJ80?

http://www.rubiconusa.com/store/products.asp?folderid=899

I'm wondering if the F150 model might work (measured my stock bumper to be 68-70 inches wide on the FJ) or if I might be able to use the "universal" bar and wing it. (I gotta find out how wide that one is)

Just thought I'd ask before going through the loops.

THANKS!!!

I've never used one.

I don't know if I'd like the idea of placing my lights so far in front of my bumper. I could see some jacka:censor:s in a parking lot backing into and busting my lights. Just my opinion.

You could probably make one about as strong with paperclips and a soldering iron. Maybe PVC pipes?

Seriously, if you are just looking for something low $$ to which you can attach lights, a pre-runner-type bar might be fine. It would look a little silly on an 80, but you could probably make it work.

For the cost of a decent pre-runner bar ($300+), most of us would/have just saved up a little more for a bumper can take the hit of a 5,000lb+ truck smacking into a rock. Search through the archives/FAQs about bumpers and you'll see detailed discussions about the merits of the ARB, Slee, etc. Excellent quality, great light mounts, look like they fit the vehicle and they can take some serious punishment.

I was thinking of adding a prerunner style lightbar onto the tjm t17 bumper. I like the way it leans outward.

IMO the desert pre-runner type light bars greatly reduce your approach angle and aren't useful toward out application (assuming that rocks and articulation type venues are what you do). Could see the bars on an expedition rig if that was your thing.

conclusion: I'd rather have them on the roof or just on the bumper.

You guys are gonna razz me, but I'm going for a desert runner expedition style on the FJ80. Baja, Death Valley, and Mojave re on the list for the next year or so. Rock crawling is pretty much new to me, but man Utah looks awesome. Last year while riding the Rubicon, I passed a few crawlers that were going up things I could not believe. Very impressive.

Do it up!... build it for how you wheel, the prerunner style is cool. I would not imagine it being terribly difficult to fit up a prerunner type bar. Do you simply want looks and a light mount, or do you want it to actually function?

Razzing is okay as long as you don't bring my mom into it. : )

Ummm...do a prerunner bumper, and then add light tabs in the hoop. A light bar on top of the stock bumper will end up as a throwaway if you plan to run at speed in the desert and crawl. Strength and clearance first...there are no shortcuts.

Do you have a 4x4 fab shop anywhere near you? I know it is intimidating to walk in and talk about a custom project vs. giving somebody a credit card over the net, but a really kick ass front bumper tucked up tight to the body with all of the light tabs you could ever dream of will only run about $450 at a good shop.
