I could really use some advice. I'm seriosly considering buying an imported 55 (from Indonesia). I have been looking for a about two years for a 55 and this one appears to be in very good condition. What things should I be thinking about when it comes to buying an imported rig? I'm afraid that I'm overlooking something that I'm going to regret. Any input would be GREATLY apprecieted. I should add that the cruiser has already been imported and has a clean FL title.

we need pics and info (year, approx. mileage, etc.)

how long has it been in FL?

Imported rig

If the truck is already legally titled and registered in Florida you shouldn't have ayy trouble in that respect. An imported cruiser doesn't have that many differences from an American version. My Aussie pig is right hand drive, has a full floater rear ( an asset), drum brakes up front (a negative for a 77), a different air cleaner (in my opinion a plus), has front and rear shoulder/seat belts, and ambulance doors (some would say a plus some might say they're a negative but they're unique!!). The heater controls and radio are laid out a bit differently from an American version but nothing major differs. if it's a solid truck the differences probably won't keep you from making the purchase as long as you are OK with the price.

For what it's worth I had no trouble at all bringing my BJ70 in from Canada- did it legally through a registered broker and the money was well spent. Gary S

Here's a link with some photos. One of the problems is that I really do not know hardly anything about this cruiser and either does the seller (used lot). There is a guy in Miami that has importing these from time to time and I suspect that this may be one of his imports. I live about 2 hours away, but have seen the vehicle once about three months ago when I was traveling nearby. At that time, the seller was asking $14,000 (seller has since lowered price to $12,000). I wasn't interested at that price, particularly in light of the fact that they could tell me virtually nothing about the beast. I looks to be in excellent condition, but I have not yet driven it, nor have I done any real testing of the vehicle from a mechanical standpoint (e.g. compresssion tests, etc.). I will say this, if it's in as good a condition mechanically as it looks cosmetically, then it is in very good condition. I do not know exactly how long it has been in FL, but I do not think it has been more than 6-9 months.

It looks to have new rubber all round the windows and such. For $ 12k it had better. AS good as it looks I would still do the magnet test to look for bondo. Crawl under it and take a close look at all the frame and sheet metal you can see. She's a beaut.

Like the ambulance doors.......

That Pig has been discussed here before - I can't remember what was said though.

For me the wheels are a turn off (personal opinion only), repaint could be bad b/c we don't know what is under it (rust could pop through in the future) and we don't know from the pics what is under the diamond plate on the floors.

Here's a link to the thread that eventhough is talking about.

Don't buy it. A very wealthy friend who knows nothing about cruisers flew to FL from MA to see that truck. He said the dealer was very shifty, didn't know anything about the truck, and wasn't very helpful. He just had a bad gut feeling. Diamond plate floorboards are never a good thing, ever.

I got the same sort of vibe when I was there a few months ago. I'm gonna go back in a few days to take a very hard look and try to get the real story about this pig. I'll post my impressions. Thank you for your advice.

With the business sense that my friend has, I would save yourself the trip. He probably has enough cash in his couch cushions to pay for it and he ran away from the deal.

There are other ones that can be found for less money and you know what you're getting. That said. I'd love to hear what the salesman says about it!!

I drove to Orlando yesterday to get a better look at the pig. Bottom line is that I am not going to move forward with any offer to buy it, although it is tempting. I did not take compression readings, but I did look it over very carefully...this cruiser is in very good condition. I saw almost no rust except for some about the size of a dime under the passenger side floor. The diamond plate that is visible in the photos are just somebody's idea of a cool floor mat...they lift right out, flooring underneath is perfect. There is a leak at the rear differential, the wipers do not work on high and the clutch is suspect (zero freeplay from floor). I think it also needs a battery. It is NOT a 5-speed as we all probably suspected, even though it is advertised as such. All venting and heater controls have been removed and therefor it has no heater. It does have A/C, however, and it works very well. It drove well, shifted smoothly, tracked straight. There is a very noticeable "shake" at aroun 60 MPH...tires probably need to be balanced. Tires are new (including the spare). I did not engage 4WD.

To be honest, part of the reason for not pursuing is this pig is that is almost too nice for my taste. I enjoy the process of working on my rig and making it the way I want it. That work has already been done here. I never intended to pay the $12,000 they want...especially given that they no nothing about the truck's background, nor do they know actual mileage (odo broken). I think they might go for 10k, (maybe offer 9k). They have been sitting on this rig for a long time and I doubt they paid much for it in Indonesia (they imported rig themselves). It's really a shame to see that sweet 55 sitting there on a lot owned by sombody that has absolutely no appreciation as to what he has...kind of makes me sick. I almost feel a an obligation to buy the thing just to "rescue" it from the used car lot people. Maybe somebody else can give it a good home. I hope so.
