Didn't you just have a bunch of work done to improve it?

Bruce, they didn't write my truck off and the repairs totaled $14,500.

Which is probably a good thing. As I understand things, unless you have a documented certified appraisal, you will get "book value", which on a 1970's vintage Toyota would not be a lot. A lot depends on the good naturedness of the ICBC inspector as well I guess.

Becky's old Chevy sprint got written off when the hood released going down the highway and smashed the window, which was a good thing. The write off that is, not the incident.

When ICBC notified me that our van was probably going to be written off it was the agent who said to start searching the classifieds and documenting the going price. It was my neighbour who told me to pull all the receipts together on recent work. I know I got way over book out of them - after finally accepting their thrid offer. But then as I told Kim, they also had two injury claims related to it. So, they were probably more motivated not to p*ss me off over another $1500 over book value.

Second, I bet that 78 isn't in any ICBC value book - just like my Safari. I checked with ICBC when I re-insured this summer to see if i needed to pay more insurance to cover the increased value becuase of the things i had done to it. They very clearly told me no. All that I needed to provide them with is proof of the current market value and proof of the improvements which would put the value above others on the market (like the reciepts for my new injectors, rebuilt IP, new treads, etc).

Bottom line, if you don't fight and get a little grumpy, they will pay you as little as possible.

Get a professional appraisal done on your trucks - and hae them updated when you make alterations and improvements. I just had my truck appraised at 50K and added the turbo/intercooler and 8274 addition. I don't mind paying a premium on collision and theft as long as I get full replacement value - in my case - I get full cash value for my truck if something happens to it.

exactly why i give the buyers an independent apraisal, most don't make time for it... in the end it is for the better to pay the $100...

BTW, if the insurance company is looking for replacement aprts i have a complete truck here they van buy off me, damaged the opposite side...

I've talked to ICBC about that in years past and they told me I needed an "approved" appraiser. When I asked for names they could not provide any!!

Does anyone have a name of an ICBC "approved" appraiser?

Only ICBC has the list of 'approved" appraisers, but they won't release it
LOL

ICBC can not bully you to use their appraiser. They may have a monopoly on the insurance but not everything else related to vehicles. It would be like them telling you to use their lawyer to look out for your interests.

This explanation from the Canadian Bar Association should clarify the procedure for everyone:

Do you have to accept the amount ICBC offers?
No. If you are not happy with the offer, you can ask the material damage manager at the centre handling your claim to review it. If you’re still not satisfied, you can use the Evaluation Procedure. As set out in the Insurance (Motor Vehicle) Act Regulations, you and ICBC each choose your own appraiser, and together they decide the value of your vehicle. If the appraisers can’t agree, an independent arbitrator can meet with them and make a written decision about the value of your vehicle. You and ICBC each pay for your own costs of the evaluation and arbitration and share the cost of the arbitrator.
What if you disagree with ICBC’s decision about who is at fault?
You have the following two choices:
  1. Ask ICBC to review the decision.
If you don’t think you should have been found fully or partly at fault, you can ask a claim manager to review your case. If you’re still not satisfied, you can apply for a Claims Assessment Review, known as a CAR. You have 60 days after ICBC tells you its decision on who was at fault in the accident to apply for a review, and it will cost you $50. ICBC will refund that money to you if you win the review. See the ICBC website (www.icbc.com) for more detail on the CAR program – it’s not always available.
  2. Sue in court.
You can sue the other driver in Small Claims Court, or Supreme Court if your claim is for more than the limit in Small Claims Court (the current limit is $10,000, but the government has announced plans to increase it to $25,000 sometime in 2005). You may want to sue for any deductible you had to pay on your collision coverage or, if you had no collision coverage, to recover the cost of your vehicle repairs or the write-off value of your vehicle.

Depending on how much diesel was in it when the gas went in it may not have done any damage. If it was nearly empty and they put in gas that would probably be why they dumped it. Diesels have very little power on gas (plus the possible damage).
