Hello everyone, I’m new here but I’ve known this forum for quite a while. Over a year ago I got my first TLC. It’s an 80 Series 1FZ-F (carbureted) with an H151F manual gearbox and barn doors, which I’ve been restoring and modifying little by little.

Long story short, I noticed I had an oil leak from the power steering pump, so I decided to fix it with the OEM rebuild kit. I disassembled it, cleaned everything carefully, and followed the FSM instructions. When I put it back together and started the engine, everything was perfect, but after a few minutes a soft knocking sound began. Since I’m pretty obsessive, I started looking for information and saw that several people had an issue where, after disassembling the pump, there’s a reassembly problem with the pump gear. When I did the install, I made sure everything was properly seated—the gear bottomed out, the keyway was correct, and I torqued it to spec. My question is: should I buy a new pump with a new gear, or should I try to inspect what’s going on? I know I didn’t damage the gear teeth because I used two pieces of wood to clamp it in a vise.

It is probably the gear. You can buy them from Toyota. I did a ps pump rebuild and botched it. Decided on a new pump to get things on the road.
 
I don’t think bottoming out the gear is correct. There should be a gap between the gear and the housing you needed to keep the same. Like here.

thanks! since is tapered it stopped by itself, probably used the wrong words. i did install it with a press, i didnt want to hammer it or drive it with the nut and the impact.

im thinking the same, but i think i will try to get everything new. if the original lasted 30 years, a new one will last the same. altho now i'll take even more caution
 
That gear is very soft. When you pull the pump, check for deformation of the teeth.
 
Does anyone know the size of the nut? I only have 6-point sockets. Have to buy a 12 point but do not know how to measure a 12-point
 
I was under the impression that you can no longer buy a new OEM pump? Has anyone been able to buy actual Toyota? I have heard the after market pumps will not last. I know mine needs to be replaced and my truck came with a rebuild kit, but honestly o would rather buy an OEM pump if that is possible ?mine is a 1992.
 
This thread is for Fzj80 93-97 which is available.
Your truck fj80 is no No longer available from Toyota, if you have the kit rebuild it, if not buy one from these guys
