Does anyone know much about this? I couldnt find anything regarding it in other threads.

I took my new 60 into get safety and emissions done, and the mechanic mentioned that my 60 will probably need this done.

As a side not; I trust this mechanic, and he also did not want the business. He had a kinda attitude of "dude...there is no way I could do this" regarding this issue.

As far as REsmogging goes; does anyone have any opinions on it? To me, I havent really heard much in the way of the overall benefits of desmogging. Its kinda striking me as being similar to the whole "throw on a cold air intake" thing.

As for the steering gearbox- just purchase a rebuilt unit then after it’s installed- send your grimey thing back to them to get a core refund.

As for RE-smogging a desmogged FJ60…That’s a daunting job even for me. It is very complicated with the zillions of vacuum hoses required and it’s really easy to hook them up wrong.
If you had all the old smog equipment, it’s probably not labeled, so putting everything back together again is pretty much like Humpty Dumpty — never put back together again.

All that smog equipment fully clutters up the engine bay, making getting at anything difficult. It also looks like hell which is reason good enough to remove it if possible if your county allows it.

Did you buy the 60 out of state and not realize you had to test where you live? A re-smog is doable, but will take time, research, and money. Shoulda, coulda, damn it!

So, sounds like they don’t test in “oblivion”? If you’re gonna remove it, store it, or sell it to an unfortunate.

I bought it out of state yes. However, I researched the issue prior to buying and thought I was in the clear. Technically I was, however some specific elements of the smog gear need to be on Which I am unclear on specifically. My mechanic was able to pass the vehicle thank God because he simply put the specific gear back on.

So I am in the clear. I was just maybe hoping to avoid future issues by having it resmogged, professionally. Because it does look pretty intense.

It might help to know what state or what the state requirements are. You have some visual inspection requirement, but not a tailpipe test? Below is a list of the emissions control system for the 2F engine. I'm not really sure which if any systems are left on after a so-called "full desmog". I think the PCV is something that can (and maybe should) remain. Spark Control needs to remain but the original distributor needs to be "recurved" or maybe a different distributor used.

You can probably leave in place and disable EGR and AI systems if needed for a visual inspection. The catalytic convertor won't work right without the AI system.

re-smoging is simply the reverse of DE-smoging

start at the end of the book and step by step in reverse as in what parts the BIG BOOK says to remove

sounds like that mechanic is on LAZY dude with a BAD attitude , :D

id say find a new friendly one that uses and actually wants to practice toyota's :

anything less is simply passe'

In defense of the mechanic; I only took it to him because they are literally a 1 min walk from my front door lol. And I only took it to him for the safety and emissions. During the inspection is when he saw some issues with the power steering gearbox. He told me he even called around to others to see about it, and they, basically, told him that its a specialty job at this point. And he seemed to concur.

What can I demystify for you?

State?
What has been removed?
What has been replaced?

This is where a simple $20/year silver star subscription that allows you to post more pictures than Google can find so we can see at a glance what's up down under da hood.

For the Steering box, most send to West Texas Off Road. They're fast turn around and good work. There's also Red Head Steering gears for a top-notch rebuild but mo' money.

Well, the 60 passed the inspection. So I am in the clear. I was basically just asking if anyone had any experience with resmogging? As in; had anyone here done it, or had it done. And maybe was it worth the price and over all trouble.

Also I am curious if DEsmogging even does anything worthwhile?

Does it impact engine power to a drastic/noticeable level?

Not a drastic change. Noticable? Probably, particularly if the smog system isn't functioning properly, which is the main thing.

If you can pass inspection the way it is, and it’s running well, I would leave it.

Most people de-smog because the stock emissions system is a complicated clusterf**k of plastic valves and vacuum lines that stop working in stages, which can leave you chasing problems for years on end as the parts reach the end of their life span. Some of those problems will cause noticeable performance issues, and some will only become clear when you fail a smog test.

Most if not all of the emissions parts are long out of production. Underneath it all is a relatively simple straight 6 engine… so if you can get rid of all that stuff without penalty, why not? If I could, I would remove most of mine just to clear out the clutter.

A properly desmogged 2F and a 2F with a perfectly intact and functional emissions system are probably pretty close in terms of performance. But “perfectly intact and functional” is not only a rare and moving target for a stock 2F, it’s also a really hard place to get to from scratch (meaning desmogged).

All that said, it would help a lot if you posted some pictures of your engine bay.

I essentially 're-smogged' my '60. I live in CA where original smog equipment is required and must be functioning. I dragged my '60 out of a field and while virtually all of the equip is there, it was largely in boxes in the back.

It was an absolute PITA. I have dozens and dozens of hours into it, I can't imagine paying a mechanic $120/hr to go through and do it all. It took following the FSM closely, and using images of vacuum lines I printed and then color-coded so I could carefully follow the lines their correct routes. Not to mention trying to hunt down a few NLA parts.

I am unaware of any vehicle performance benefits from smogging. A well-tuned engine will burn pretty cleanly and there are WAY fewer items to break. Also, the parts really clutter up the engine bay which is not a small thing if anyone is doing any work on it.
