2nd gen 4runner antenna is apparently designed to go up with every ignition. If it is defective and rarely goes up, would it work to unscrew the thing and cut or unplug the wire so it's permanently up?

they should have a switch on there so you could put it down when off road!

If the stereo is off or in the CD setting it will not come up... If it's on and set to AM or FM, then it will.
with an after market stereo it goes up and stays up, at least my 95 does, well now it goes up about half way! the bad thing is it got messed this time just up the street by a lo hanging branch! well all three times it got screwed up it was on regular roads! Murphy in full action there. i still need to put a switch in so it can be put down when 4-wheeling.

A switch-what a great idea! Wonder why Toyota didn't think of it? The "old school" fj62 has one.
The earlier trucks ('85-89) had a manual switch above the radio, I have one. I guess they figured automatic was better, most head units have a signal wire that will control it as well.
