I have driven 80s with both the supercharger (mine) and the turbocharger (the white one that was for sale on slee). The turbo definitly out performed the super. Enough of a difference that when a kit is available again, I will most likely switch.
Cheers,

Reffug, sorry if I am retarded but is the legend your cruiser? You have the safari turbo right?

Yes that would be retarded. I guess I should have been more clear in my statement. The legend would be the 'SAFARI TURBO' itself. It is known world-wide for its performance and bullet-proof reliability. Not my truck in any way shape or form. Yes I am priveleged enough to possess said unit as are several other board members. All I am saying is it will be interesting to see the side by side comparisons and numbers of these 2 units. Given the time frame of development i.e. years past vs. today one would expect some improvement in the performance of the unit as you have previously mentioned. Also glad to hear your boss had a safari, will be really interested to hear his impressions as a driver of both.

As to the supercharger vs. turbo please people do a search. :D That horse is dead and buried and would really appreciate it if you all would stop beating it. :flipoff2:

BTW, Steve - did you guys have the intake ported & polished? Yes, that engine looks very nice. Reminds me of when I saw the hi-po 2F.

Will your 3" exhaust have to follow the stock routing below the frame? How are you guys addressing the catalytic converters?

No we didnt port or polish. Because we are dynoing the engine with the new turbo, we want to show real results. We also didnt do lower compression pistons, or forged pistons. We want the turbo to be ran at 7 psi, so we will be dynoing it for that.

The exhaust will run the same as stock. We have done a 3 inch exhaust over the frame before, but its a really tight fit, and sometimes rattles. It usually only rattles in reverse, but we didnt want to sell a kit like that.

Reffug, our main goal with the new kit over the safari is durability. The safari kit is a great kit no doubt, but my boss has had to replace the wastegate twice over the years, and he also had to re-build the turbine. Our best reasoning for this is because the wastegate mounts to the turbine, and runs really hot.

My bosses 80 was the U.S. cruiser they designed and tested the safari kit on, so we have been down this whole path before. Overall, both kits are great, we just wanted to upgrade points we thought could be better. I expect the dyno results to be similar, so dont think your missing out. I know the big guy here will be more than happy to talk about the differences between the kit, I will also be posting new information as it arrives.

I'm so glad someone finally decided to do this. It had to be done. Although I have never drivin a forced induction rig, I read that the Safari unit is really good, turn key, no worries deal. I am glad that you guys are putting time, money, and effort into building something quality. I was wonding why no one had reordered 20 more units. Oh well, looks like we will be finding out real soon what intercooled turbo power feels like from us yanks.

Steve-O,

I'm sure im not the only one thinking this but i just have to ask....

What happened to your bosses old safari turbo kit?

So with the Turbo how much Hp gained? 60Hp?

Its just sitting here. I dont think he has plans on selling it anytime soon. Obviously he wants to make sure our new turbo is going to last before he sells his old one. I thought this thread was dead, the best new MAF turbo info can be found here.

steve-o any word on the kit and if a self install version will be available?

If you're building a TC system to make comparable power to the SC options, is additional engine management really necessary? The OEM MAF set-up is capable of dealing with the SC, so why not the TC? The only extra control needed would be the wastegate whether it be mechanically or electrically controlled.

Personally I wouldn't be looking to make every bit of power I could squeeze out of the engine, but just want bump it close to 300hp, which is about what the SC is making. I guess I'm thinking of a "base" package that won't require any additional engine tuning to satisfy the majority of those looking to up the power.

The more expensive "extras" could be availabe to those looking to push the envelope. Those the want to spend the $$ could add injectors, fuel pumps, ignition upgrades, etc. if so inclined.

(PS Just realized this was a resurrected thread. Wasn't paying attention to the dates. )
