Over the weekend I started to tackle resealing my rear axle. I got the rear locked, ass end on jacks, then spun the rear tires to make sure it was locked.

I started with the driver side axle because it was the one leaking. I wasn’t able to finish in the same day because some of the axle studs were bent. (My fault) So it sat over night before getting back to it. When I put the axle shaft back in and started to torque the nuts, the axle would spin freely and the other side spun in the opposite direction. That tells me the rear is not locked anymore.

I did not do anything inside the car, left the transfer case in N and shut the car off with the rear locker engaged. Shouldn’t the rear still be locked? It wouldn’t just unlock itself?

Not going to tackle the passenger side until I figure this out because I know the rear needs to be locked to pull the shaft. Any input is greatly appreciated!

When you restore ignition power does it show that your rear locker is engaged?
I’m not sure, I haven’t attempted to start it or anything after getting the axle and hub put back together. Will try when I get home from work.

It’s not engaged!
maybe rotate both axle shafts to see if it will engage!

I’m no expert here, I’m only throwing some thing’s out there!
Yes, I know it is not engaged right now. But my worry is that I did not disengage the locker, and now it is unlocked. I don't want that happening when I take the Right hand side axle shaft out.
And no worries! I appreciate it!

Pull the sensor cover and you check to see if it's locked. Also with the cover removed you can remove the bolt that holds the collar that shifts the locker gear that floats on the axle shaft. With that bolt removed you can manually engage the locker and pull the axle shaft. Be careful pulling the axle shaft, you may want a helper, to make sure that the locker gear is not dislodged with the pulling of the axle.

Hm, that seems way more in depth. I'd have to see if I can some videos on that before doing it, I don't want to risk messing something up and make a bigger job for myself. But thank you for that, maybe that's the way to go as it can't "unlock" itself.

Any idea on why it would have unlocked itself without ever moving?

It's 3 bolts and unplug the wiring harness. That's all. May need to give the cover a gently whack to loosen it and pull it. Crawl under and look at axle, where the actuator bolts on, and it should be clear. May need to remove a actuator guard but that's only a few bolts.

Move on at this point. Until you can reproduce the problem.
You know the axle is unlocked because the opposite rotation of the rear wheels, no need to open up anything.
I'm guessing that the rear locker unlocked normally because the CDL was unlocked at some point. From shifting the transfer case or operating the CDL button if you have that. The fact that you thought the engine had to be running for anything happening is confusing you.
