POLL: 4:1 split case noise level

Do you have 4:1 t-case gears and is the high range noise unbearable for daily driving?

I run a 3:1 set behind the h55 in my bj60. Currently on 4.11 and 33s. Very happy with the overall gearing for what the truck does. Low enough for most places and not so low to have to keep stopping to shift low to high range while in a group on the trail. Sometimes the 4:1 would be better but I don’t look to wheel this truck that hard. I do second guess not going with 10% ud with a 3.3:1 set now that I’m considering going to 35s. But for me the gearing choice was based on wanting a long spline input gear which I only saw in stock tooth count. I clearanced my 38mm case by hand carefully with a grinder without punching through. As for noise. Not bad. Certain speeds in high range it does hit a particular harmonic where there is a whine. Mostly not an issue and the gear set doesn’t have that many miles on it so not sure if that might improve with time as gears break in.
This is mainly why I was looking at 4:1 - the 10% high range underdrive is perfect for 35s. I didn't realize I could get a 3.3:1 set with the high range underdrive.

yes thats whats going in mine as we speak 3.3 w/10% underdrive on 34"x11" tires 4.11 diffs

I've got 4.11 diffs already too. The math works out great with those, 35s, and 10% high range underdrive. Add in the lower low range and it checks all the boxes for what I want.

I have Orion case number thirty one. In my 40s, with V8 dual transfer cases and 5.29s. And it did have 40 inch buggers. Now it's on forty five inch ag tires (American chevrons)

I will admit it's been sidelined for a while with other things going on, but those ag tires are fun.

It gets trailered to the trail head. Once at the trail head, we often cover 200, sometimes more than three hundred miles before returning to the road system.

Most of its time is spent fairly slow speeds , but there are some river bed sections and some wide open mountain passes where I get it up to forty five. And I've gotten it up to fifty five a couple times actually on one of the wide open river beds.
As I think about it now, I actually still had it on the road for a good long while with the 4:1 lows. The Orion comes with a complete gear set... ALL the internals. Never had any high range noise at highway speeds either. Not that I could hear over all the other noises anyway. :)

I've done 3:1 low range gearing a couple of FJ sixties and a couple of eighties.

High range noise?

Anyway... High range transfer case noise? Huh? What that be?

Mark...

Jim,

I just went on a 400 plus mile road trip in my 40 over two days. The wind noise and tires drown out the slight gear whine in the case. If in doubt, find someone who has the gears and go for a test drive/ride and listen for yourself. I think it is well worth the off road performance. 3.3 low would be close. I think the underdrive gears are what is goin to give you noise as it only replace 2 out of the 3 gears I believe.

I think it’s loud. The day the 4:1 it was installed I was convinced there was somethign wrong. I had a brand new H55F installed at the same time, and I really thought there was no way this noise could be normal. Lucky for me, Georg happened to be in town and took it for a spin and told me that’s normal. It’s been over a year now, and I’m used to it, but I still don’t love it.

It’s not a constant whine. It gets louder/softer depending on RPM and whether it’s coasting or pulling, at least that’s my perspective. But, windows down, putting around at 40 - 45 MPH, it’s pretty annoying.

That all said, off-road in 4 lo, is so great. I can’t go back now. Although I am very much considering going to 3:1 and then adding a doubler of some kind. The only thing better than 4:1 would be…you know… 6:1.

If this was my daily, I would not survive with the 4:1. I’ve gotten soft in my old age, and my 200 has spoiled me.

I daily my 60, hence making this crybaby post haha! Thanks for the feedback.

I'm used to the regular whine of the 4 speed and stock split case, but I've had several people tell me the high range gear set for the 4:1 gears are more straight cut and they whine MUCH louder.

Come down to Phoenix and take it for a spin anytime.

My wife and I were talking about potentially doing a winter trip to some warmer weather...
