I'm going to do my best to make it this year, although it might be in a Volvo wagon :D

Even though my 80 might be gone soon, my heart will always be with TAC and TLCA. The timing is just not right at the moment... but blah blah blah... we've all been there at one time or another.

They let Volvo's in TLCA right? (maybe I'll slap a TRD sticker on it ... :D )

I'm gonna get the online registration back in working order... it just makes things easier.

I'll post an update tomorrow.

Peace!

New guy

Hello,

I got a call from a friend of friend (Thad, don't remember his last name) about your club and the Flatnasty event. I am currently a member of many car clubs, the biggest being the Kansas City Viper Club. We are located down here in Nixa, MO.

I have purchased an Iguana. This is built off of a 1988 Toyota pickup. Only thing saved was the frame, rear end, transmission and engine block. Everything else is pretty much new. I use this vehicle to cruise around my ranch and am investigating what I need to do to it to join up with this event. Looks like you are looking for trucks to meet your minimum.

I don't carry a spare right now but can add nor do I have the truck registered. It is purely an off road vehicle. What else do I need to do to join up for the event? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, bring it!!! Looks like fun. You will need to join the TLCA as it is a TLCA sanctioned event. But you should do that anyway;)

Yes, I plan to member up. Just trying to get an idea of what I need to add to the truck for the 'inspection' and also the itinerary. Do I need to drive up the night before? I need to get these dates on my calendar before I'm booked up.

You need a working parking brake, set brake, put in 3rd gear and let out clutch, should kill the motor.
A fire extinguisher
A first aid kit, ziplock with bandaids and some Neosporin
I think that's about it.

The truck is fully functional with parking brake, turn signals etc. I just do not have a windshield and the truck is not registered or licensed. Is that a problem?

Nope, many dedicated trail rigs there.

They will trail rate you from 1-5 according to tire size, lift, lockers, gears, winch, etc.

saw a 'tree' saver listed. Is this a special device or just do I just need a strap to protect a tree? Sorry for the questions, I like to be prepared plus I am definately a newbie. I have lots of trails that I just jump in and drive without being accountable or regulated so I like to know all of the rules.

This is actually an open event so you dont have to be a TLCA member but its worth it anyway. Following is a list from TLCA or requirements for a TLCA scantioned event but since this is open I dont believe that everything has to be covered. Only what the park requires.

TLCA Vehicle Inspection Requirements
Vehicles registered for participation in a TLCA, or TLCA sanctioned, event are subject to a 'Vehicle Inspection'. And though TLCA makes no representation as to the impact of such an inspection upon 'safe' participation in an event, failure to pass such an inspection will disqualify the vehicle from participating in the event.

All determinations pertaining to the 'Vehicle Inspection' shall be at the sole judgement of the event committee, and/or its designates, responsible for such inspections. If a vehicle fails to pass an inspection, correction of any deficiencies may be attempted and the vehicle reinspected ... provided such correction and reinspection can be conducted without impact to event schedules.

minimum vehicle requirements
The following are minimum vehicle requirements which, if not met, disqualify a vehicle from participating in an event:

Vehicle Registration: Must be current Liability
Insurance Coverage: Must be current, and meet applicable governmental requirements.
Service Brakes: Must be able to stall engine when idling in 2nd gear (1st gear if 3 speed)
Parking Brake: Must be able to stall engine when idling in 3rd gear (2nd gear if 3 speed)
Brake Lights: Must be functioning properly
Tires: All tires, including spare, must have at least 2/32" of tread. Spare tire must be fully inflated. Air down to a maximum of 15 psi prior to safety inspection
Roll Bar: Any open vehicle must have a roll bar firmly attached to the vehicle
Seat Belts: Required for driver and each passenger
Fire Extinguisher: Must show full charge on gauge and/or have seal intact
First Aid Kit: Recommended to be as complete as is reasonably possible
Antenna Length: Not longer than 54", unless both ends are firmly attached to the vehicle

evaluated items
The following are evaluated items which, depending on severity and/or quantity of deficiencies, may disqualify a vehicle from participating in an event:

Headlights
Running Lights
Turn Signals
Windshield: No dangerous cracks
Wipers
Horn
Exhaust System: Must be intact. No open exhaust, excessive noise or excessive smoke
Steering: Check play in wheel, condition of column and mounting hardware, knuckle arms
Hoses & Lines: Water, gas, brake lines (Please do not bring a vehicle with excessive leaks to an event. Such leaks can be damaging to the environment.)
Vehicle Jack: Hi-Lift type recommended
Tow Strap, Tow Rope and/or Chain
Winch

items to consider
The following are recommended items which TLCA encourages you to consider:

CB Radio
Tools
Fan Belt, Radiator Water, Battery Cables
Tire Gauge, Tire Pump, Tire Patch Kit
Rags, Hand Cleaner, Litter Bags
Axe, Shovel
Flashlight, Spare Batteries, Spare Vehicle Key

We are not trying to beat you up with rules, but this is what it will take to keep the park safe and open.
I am sure others will chim in on the final verdic. I dont believe anything will be an issue with you rig other than if you carry insurance on the iguana. I know its not licensed but the requirement is registration and not licensing. The are a large number of rigs there that are not street licensed

The tree saver is a wide strap to wrap around a tree if you need to winch up something. It is not good to wrap your winch strap or a chain around the tree as it will do damage.

They actually dont allow you to go off by yourself or lone wolf on trails. Most of the time there are groups of 3 to 10 or more truck that will take off and run trails together. There will be plenty of people to help you out and keep you on the correct path. All the trails are labeled like ski courses with ratings of 1 to 5 stars.

Hey Thad! Talked to you last night. I don't have the truck registered at all. I guess I can just register a 1988 pickup??

As far as when to show up its anything from one day to all four days depending on what you want. The majority of folks are Fiday to Sunday. Many will do thursday on and a few Wednesday on. Being that its so close to you( where others may come from as far as 12 + hours and more) you can come day of but that limits time or the night before or as long as you want. There will be 4 to 5 truck from springfield and 6 to 8 campers in our little circle compound and you are invited to stay with us as long as you want. There are many people that set up single camps as the valley we use is long lined up and down with camps raning from 1 tent and camper up to 10 or more in other camps.

I am a little fuzzy on what register means. I would guess when you bought it they gave you some kind of paperwork. I would say if you have insurance on it then that would work. I have been to many of these and have never been ask for titlework on my truck. Just an insurance card but I am sure that at sometime today one of the guys incharge of the inspection will chime in on what required. Just keep checking back and I will watch also.

From the pics I saw of your truck there wont be an issue. They just dont want someone showing up with a half built truck and no safety gear and have that person cause a wreck. I will start working on Gary for you. My group will be there thursday on but let me know what kind of time frame your looking at so I can start working on Gary's wife

I didn't see any mention of this event being posted on TTORA. You might want to post up there too. In the past when I organized events I had some nice flyers printed up and took them to local parts stores, offroad shops(if there are any), the Toyota dealership, Farm and Fleet type stores, and anywhere else I thought a Toyota 4x4 owner might frequent. A few times I handed them out or left them on Toyota 4x4 trucks. You might consider making up some flyers if for nothing else to send with Jason(FlatlandTRD) when he heads up to the Iowa event.

Hope this helps,
Kurt
