I have a 72’ 40 and it seems as if there is too much play in the steering wheel, any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

have OP sit in truck and turn steering wheel back and forth like between 10am -2pm ( steering wheel time ) :grinpimp:

look at ALL your moving parts , tie rods ends, drag link end, center arm , and especially your Birfierlds axles for vertical cone bearing Free-play , this gets overlooked alot ,

make a list of what u find to have slop in it , if more then 1 tie rod end , simply buy the MONSTER Rebuild kit with 555 Brand JAPAN parts in it and overhaul your steering ,

also , giving all your grease fittings a " good feeding" will take slop out too ,

not sure if a 72 box has a adjust on it , but i would think likley ,

and well if u have a bad CONE bearing vertical rotation birfields , then thats a Full overhaul time there

IMO

good luck @Birdhead :)

Do NOT skip to the "adjust the steering box" step in an effort to get a quick fix. First of all that adjustment is NOT for taking out slop in the steering box!!! If you doubt this, READ THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL steering section before doing ANYTHING... That will get you familiar with all the steering parts and the terms used to describe them.

Do as Matt suggested. Figure out EXACTLY where the slop is and fix it one step at a time.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Is there a service manual on here?

I've got what feels like too much play in my '76 as well...2 inches to be exact before the tires move. I need to start checking all moving parts on mine to narrow down the issue.

The two spots for adjustment that are “easy” are to adjust the center link as well as drag link

If you can’t get play out of drag link because the set screw goes too far in is to use the “penny trick” care of Mark @65swb45 ;)

Little things like this are just your trucks way of saying “play with me”

If it asks for boggers and a bigger engine... ignore it ... it’s just you and not really the truck talking :meh:
