I did mine in gun metal. I ended up peeling it off. I couldn't get the edges right. I am thinking of trying it again with vinyl.

I have a LX in silver. Looking to darken all chrome. Not that familiar with plastidip. Need to research. Was also thinking vinyl film on various chrome bits. Maybe LC back door handles. For me, chrome is very OG.

We're of the same mindset actually. I've on order some gun metal plastidip and will be trying again like @highrisk. So, stay tuned and I'll post updated pictures once I get back into town.

I look forward to that.

Most--almost all--of the chrome on our 2015 silver LC has been ruined (eaten away) by the mag chloride Colorado sprays all over the roads in the winter. I'm also looking for some means of covering this ugly chrome. I've even considered taking it to a body shop & having them remove all the chrome & just paint it the body color, but I fear that will be cost prohibitive. BTW- this problem of chrome being eaten away by the mag chloride is VERY common around here.

@CLHickman you can also just use the plati-dip clear which will make the chrome look like matte aluminum and will match the silver without all the bling the chrome has. Did it on an audi I had to get rid of all the chrome trim and looked quite good. Dont have a pic of my car here but here is pic of the web to see the effect. I think it would blend in with your silver color very well.

That looks sweet! I'm going to have to try that on the scant chrome I've got on mine (not blacking out until I replace the factory wheels).

huh, evidently there is also a plasti-dip smoke also that get gets a little darker aluminum look.

personally dont think painting tail lights is a good idea but the grill in the video shows the smoke pretty well.

So this stuff is spray on? How well does it hold up?

In my experience it holds up quite well. There are Youtube videos of longer term tests.

had them on my supra wheels for a year maybe without any issues but it does not see much off-road action :)
I eventually got sick of the look and it was a big pain getting it all off. Eventually hit it with goof off etc...

I visited the "dipmycar" site & was blown away! They have metallic (silver & anthracite grey) plus that smoke on the video. I think I'll try the silver (maybe the grey?) to cover up my ugly chrome and if it's too bright, then spray on some light coats of smoke to darken it.

Can't use clear 'cuz the chrome is actually very spotted--looks like rust spots--and those would still show through a clear coat.

Anyway, looks like Plasti-Dip is the answer for me & the cost is negligible--just a few hours of my time.

So this morning I pulled off the plastidip from the doors. I did each door a little different to get a feel for how it'd look.

One is with the plastidip on the chrome, the other is with it on the molding only.

My gut feeling is that I really don't like either. I'm starting to think more about just removing the molding all together like @Markuson suggested.

Anyway, I wanted to show you guys what I was up to.

FWIW on the molding: it basically acts as many hope line-x will if they do that. It is excellent protection. Meaning, the molding actually protects the bottom part of both doors. If you ever actually damage it on a trail, you just buy another piece of plastic and pop it on. In the meantime, it protects the metal very well.

I actually found out the hard way how effective that side molding is. I was wheeling my truck through a narrow section of trail with a down tree, and I guess my tire kicked up a giant branch and it knocked into the side of my truck-hard. The sound was one of thos "oh sh-t" sounds where you dont even want to see it.

I got out to look at it and the molding was totally jacked up (I thought)-popped out halfway from the side of my truck and the branch was between it and my truck.

I pulled the branch out and hoped the molding would be salvageable. Well, not only was it salvageable, it popped right back in, cleanly and authoritatively. No damage. You can't even tell it happened.

Without that molding, I'm convinced I'd have a major gouge on the side of my truck.

I dig the red.

Cool, your LX will look very different when done. Personally I like blacked out chrome on silver vehicles (the contrast really pops) but I'm sure the gray will be good too (way better than chrome).

I'm strongly considering painting my entire wheels red. If I had rock warrior wheels I'd paint the ring a bright color for sure.
