Yes, i am. I am a fully qualified electrical/environmental craftsman on both kc-10s, and currently c17s.
Ive tackled a timing belt/water pump job on my (now sold) 2002 4runner. As far as working on cars/trucks-- that is the most extensive ive dove. It took me about a week to complete due to work and time available. At the time my squadron was less than a mile away so i could walk to work, but chose to drive my 1960 f100 anyways for fun.
Since then ive moved 10miles away from work, and ive been delving into paint/body work on my alternate ride (the f100), so its disassembled and registered as inop. So the landcruiser is my ride to work.
I have room and plentiful tools to work on it (and i wouldnt be scared to do get my hands dirty), but i would be out a ride to work. And cars are different than airplanes and my mechanical experience in the same respect is very different to automotive as well. I know doing the timing belt could take me more than a weekend. Also having a 2 year old time is more crunched. Thats why im having it done for me. In a few more years (when my kiddo is school aged) ill have more downtime to go farther into breaking into automotive work. But for now thats my situation.

Kids and wife should come first. But if that can make a difference some day, keep in mind that Uber is pretty cheap nowadays if you're out of a ride for a few days. Could save you big bucks if you can otherwise find the time to work on the beast.

^^^ He got a very good point. You can spend all that money save on other stuff.;)

What you sold a 2002 4runner (3RD Gen.)? :bang:

3rd gen 4runner was a 2wd. More of a rugged minivan than a rig. But owning it is what made me want and eventually buy a cruiser.

Dropped it off to Gary at Mudrack today. Tons of 60/62 series and 40series there. Got an estimate for the work thats about to be done and its looking like my own ballpark estimate of over 1200 but less than 1600 was accurate. He never responded with a estimate but once i was in his shop he started plugging numbers right away. He was very courteous and pretty fun to talk to as well and also gave my 3yo boy a small inspection light to have/play with. Outta respect for him and his business i dont want to post the estimate on here, but if anyone else is curious or has any questions, please p.m me and ill give you info.
Im glad my cruisers in good hands, even if its just for routine maintenance i dont want to invest my post deployment time off on. (Family first).

Got my ride back today. Id say im a happy customer. A bit more poor, but with some peace of mind that id have above having it done by a dealership. If anyone (using search that found this thread) wants to know anything that i can help share with you, please p.m me and ask. I have some words of wisdom that may help prepare you if you have similar concerns/questions as i had stated in the beginning of this thread.
Overall, i am a very satisfied customer. And am willing to give anyone who p.m's me a honest and full review + advise about having your truck serviced at mudrak.
Even though i am capable of doing the job myself, im glad i went thru him so that i could spend more time enjoying my family during my post-deployment r+r (comp'ed time off) instead of diving into a weedend (or possibly a week-i work slow) of missed time due to learning my cruiser- and have attention to detail/know-how performing the maintenance.
P.m me if you have any questions.
