Hi All,

I wanted to get opinions on this, not really anywhere needing to be able to install all the glass on my 1970 FJ55 project but will need to budget for new glass if needed.

I know that earlier glass was quite dangerous. With my 55 I have all the original glass and almos all of it is in good shape except for the windshield. My question is whether I should use the original OEM glass or I should have new "safety" modern pieces cut for the restoration? I don't want to have to spend the $$ but I am worried about that older glass shattering in an accident and causing major cuts. I am also wondering if getting the OEM glass tinted would help? In the 40 this has never been an issue as the windshield is new and the only other glass is on the hard doors. I will be carrying my little girl and wife in the pig for short trips around San Diego so I want to make is safe as possible.

Any opinions appreciated.

My understanding of the glass, is all the flat pieces I thought were hard more tempered glass. The windshield, because it is a compound curve, is softer material. My new oem windshield seemed the same way.

I think OEM is the only glass you can get for the windshield in a FJ55. When I needed mine replaced I couldn't find it. No one could look it up correctly. Now whether that was just bad customer service or not, they said OEM was the only way to go.

maybe but on my fj40 they just cut a piece of glass to fit? definetly not oem but it worked and they used a general seal as well. been working well for years.

on the glass issue, basically I am looking for more info on the safety aspects of the OEM side glass (rear cargo area, doors, rear, etc). Is OEM unsafe to use?

I busted a piece of the OEM side window glass when I was restoring the Piggy. The glass just shattered into a bunch of little pieces and I don't recall them being sharp.

noah,
side and rear glass even today is AS2, which is tempered safety glass. it shatters into tiny cubic pieces. thats its safety quality, instead of the larger shards like a home window would shatter into.

windshield safety glass is laminate glass, AS1 rating, and it has the laminate plastic inside the two thinner layers of tempered glass. if you look at any of your original glass, it will have the respective AS1 and AS2 rating etched into it.

OEM toyota might be the only option soon for front glass. I just ordered a windhsield from a glass company in SD, and there was only one in socal from any of their suppliers. i am sure there are more out there, but act soon.

thanks Brett, should of just called you! :)

for the glass, I was under the impression that I could order up the front glass custom made? I did this for the 40 awhile back, but maybe they could do this because it was basically just flat glass with no curve. good to know that the existing stuff i have is safety glass, thanks

no worries. aftermarket glass cost me $180 dollars. OEM at SOR.com is $560. get on it if you want one. btw. since is curved in two axies, its pretty specific to FJ55, so custom would be cutting down a larger windshield. OEM would be cheaper than cutting down an existing curved glass.

Anyhow, I found one, so there are more out there.
