tricky job?

What I am seeing is that my wheel will track straight until I do a tight turn on some undulations; and then the steering wheel will be off center by 5-15* for awhile. I'm not sure what causes it to correct other than doing some sharp turns.

I am also getting a popping noise during some odd turns, and have a bit of play in the wheel. Steering rack and bushings have 50k on them so I don't think I've got an issue there.

If you replaced the rack, this is child's play compared to that.

Since I needed an alignment to get ready for the trip to HIH and to recenter the wheel after the shaft replacement, I got my local LC alignment shop to do it all at the same time. I don't remember the cost so it must not have been bad.

My rack was replaced by the shop as it was leaking, etc....it fixed things in front, but not that wheel sensation. This is EXACTLY what my wheel is doing...

It looks simple enough that I could do it, I just need to confirm it'll work for a manual 99LC.

hey mate, could you elaborate on childs play haha. im in the process of deciding wether to tackle it myself or pay someone. i was told by the mechanic that it was a massive job but then reading your post made me wonder if he was explaining the long way round. did you need to remove the steering components from the steering wheel down to get to the shaft and u joint of visa versa from the rack up. or can you just replace the u joint without dismantling everything else.

Do you have ifs or sas?

These symptoms are EXACTLY what I have...for $28 w/shipping...I ordered the parts.

My column is manual, not electronic like the LX. Parts (authentic OEM) showed that they fit my VIN.

Been annoying for the last 5 years...this extra wobble and the 5-15* un-center after sharper turns and the little pop sometimes. I have basically an all new front ends with UCA/Ball Joints, Steering rack, tie rods, etc.

Will let you know how it comes up. I'm hoping its not a tough job, looks like these bushings/bolts are right behind the sheeting column plastic. Original poster showed pretty simple pictures...hopefully it is just that lol

From what I recall, a bolt has to be taken out of the steering rack (on the drivers side, should be the only bolt there) which will allow it to move enough to get the shaft off of the input splines that are on the rack, then you have the lower bolt on the lower steering rack that needs to come out. (lower left of this picture) Then you just have a two bolts on the coupler joining the upper shaft and the lower shaft to unbolt. and the whole shaft with u joint will slide down and then out. Soak all the splines in penatrating oil overnight though, that coupler can have some corrosion or old hard grease in it and the lower shaft will get stuck. It's pretty easy.

I'm planning on doing this, this weekend. I have the parts...any thoughts/video's on how to remove the plastic covering on the steering column? Once there, it looks pretty simple removing the screws, then the gasket pieces, replace with the new screw gasket pieces and new screws?

I did this last week on my 03 LX. The intermediate shaft 2 replacement solved my steering play. It is tight as a drum.
I'm dealing with some north east corrosion, so I used stands to get the front wheels off the ground to make it easy to maneuver.

0.1) disconnect the battery. I didnt do this and I had abs problems after I was done and needed a reset.
1) Front wheels off ground
2) penetrating oil
3) I could not slide the shaft sleeve enough to remove it. So I took out the steering rack mounting bolts so I could push the rack forward.
4) use a paint marker to mark the alignment points of the shaft connections
5) the connectors are splined so after taking it apart i greased the new shaft and connectors to ease reassembly
6) I misaligned the shaft connection to the rack when I was done, so I used techstream to initialize vgrs at center and reset the abs errors.

Took me long enough to get this done...but having it done as I write this. I ordered OEM bushings/bolts...I'll update after to see if this fixes this problem/thread.
