Great shots what lense you using?

I use a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens with a Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash mounted off of the camera. If you use a 70-200 or a 75-300 you will not get anywhere near the detail from a true macro lens. The EF 100 is a true Macro lens. It is only good for macro shots and portraits if you are 12 feet away from someones face. 1 to 1 ratio is as close as I can focus. The detail you see that I post here on MUD are no where near the detail of the 7 to 10 megabyte originals that I have. Taking macro shots are very hard for me. I have not taken any macro shots in about 4 months so I am out of practice. It is not like riding a bike, you have to practice all of the time to be good. I am not good but am still learning. Some of the macro shots I have seen by other people are truly amazing and inspiring as well. If you flinch as much as a millimeter it is out of focus. You have to use a diffuser as well. One out of 60 shots are in focus. My depth of field is about as thin as a piece of paper (F-9 to F-11 ISO 200) Even just depressing the shutter can throw everything out of focus(like pulling the trigger on a gun) so at times I also use a remote shutter/trigger. All shots have to be handheld because setting up a tripod just is not practical while rolling around on the ground and sticking your head in bushes. I learned everything I know from a Canon forum. aren't forums great?

yea i never do macro work i love to look at it i have tryed some stuff i have a 50 mm prime lens but i mainly use that in studio and if i focus on some ones nose ther ear is out of focus even at f8, yes forms are great!

That 50 mm you have should take some real nice macros. Do you only shoot with the Sony that I saw you with on the mudfest ride?

Macro - Canon Digital Photography Forums is where I have learned what little I know and they have some awesome shots. A user-name by the name Lord V takes some amazing shots. They use 6 to 1 ratios, photo stacking and some do some killer stereograms. (when you cross your eyes they are 3D) If you click on the link it will bring you straight to the macro shots. They also have every type of photography as well on the site. Being that you are a professional, I am sure you may already know about this site.

i have 2 A700 and an large format A900 i use all sigma lenses , i have 1 sony lens , and 1 tamron that i let larry use , i guess he likes it cz its still on his cam ha , i might try some macro stuff to day haha imgooing to the park gota do some fam pics so will im waiting around ill try

Sounds like some nice gear. If you do try some macro today, I find the best diffuser is a paper towel wrapped lightly around your flash with tape. It has worked better for me than any store bought diffuser that I have and that is what the pros tell me as well.

yea i use diff ones i like the fong dome , and lumi quest soft 8x8 soft box for for speed light and i have some othe fricks i like u can buy some funk foam from hobby lobby and fold it around ur flash and make a bounce defuser and snoots , have u ever tryed an omni bounce ?

No I have never tried the Omni Bounce. I have a lumi quest that folds up pretty flat and don't really like it other than the fact that it packs down to nothing and fits in my backpack easily. I really need to start shooting macro again.

Port Hudson, North of BR on HWY 61 its worth a weekend ride to check it out. First Sunday of every month is Fire Power where they set off the cannons and old muskets. Good hiking we hiked 12 + miles. The kids can earn park badges you don't have to be a scout to earn them anyone who hikes the park and fills out the booklet questions can get one ;)

Nice! I like that Generac Generator in the back ground!

I just got a Canon 5D a few weeks ago and new L series 100 mm macro lens. Being that it is like 20 something mega pixels it shows every mistake you make. The low light sensors are incredible. You can take pics in the dark that look like it is late afternoon. If I ever take a good pic with it (have not yet) I'll post up.

Larry the 80 looks awesome. After seeing that pic I am pretty sure I am going to have to black out the wheels on my '96.

Good eye Deryl generator backup is cruicial out at these sites.

Isaac a 5D  now your pulling out the big guns :D thats a great camera I look forward to seeing some pics with it. The 100 mm macro should be great for taking your rain forest specimens.

talk about some big guns buy hey my moto is wanna play gotta pay! larry looks like ya having fun with that 700

Definitely enjoying it John and always learning :)

Well I made it home and took this pic today in my backyard. I still am having a hard time taking pics with this camera compared to my 40D (good thing I still have it). Unfortunately having a good camera does not make you a good photographer.:bang:
