I'm still running duracool in mine. but if you want to run 134A a good set of gauges and a vacuum pump you can DIY

134A

88479FREON GAS, AIR CONDITIONER (DRUM, COOLER REFRIGERANT)
90986-02007250G, AIR CONDITIONER(DEALER OPTION)
90986-02008200G, AIR CONDITIONER(DEALER OPTION)

Thanks.
Yeah, I know. I would be confident going that route if I knew that the system was empty, but since it is full and working fine, I prefer to go somewhere that can recover the freon.

you can also get a shop to evacuate correctly for the environment and they can put a vacuum on it. to test for leaks after that you can DIY

Hey everyone. I'm here trying to figure out if my air compressor needs oil. Is there any way to check that. I have 96 HDJ80. I just replaced my ac condenser.

Just Bought a compatiable HDJ81 AC compressor kit Denso P/N 471-1433 .. It doesn't have the correct electrical connectors but that's easy to fix .. This is the kit version with oil & orings .. I require you to use the top plate from your old compressor which is no big deal .. The reason why Denso discontinued the 471-1433 was because it was a R12 only compatible unit .. The put R134 in my compressor & ruined it at the shop ..

depending on what you replaced if you replaced condenser or recever dryer the FSM tells you how much to add...

assuming you swapped the compressor these are the specs of drain and fill

Reviving this old thread as many of the part numbers are showing no longer available. I have a late '95 hdj81 (rhd). From what I can tell all the parts are the same for my rig, my AC compressor is starting to squeal, still works but looking for replacement now. Anyone have updated part numbers? I am already a 134a rig.

Current update for posterity:
1992 HDJ81 w/ cool box.
Just installed:
- 471-1141 compressor
- 478-0107 receiver / drier
- 475-2002 expansion valve
- 17501 Continental belt
All purchased from RockAuto for $312 shipped. Everything's working great!

Hi,

Has anyone replaced their RHD evaporator lately? I have a 1991 hdj81. A few years ago I replaced the compressor, dryer, condenser, schrader valves and all the o-rings except for the ones at the evaporator. It held 30in vacuum overnight but a leak seems to have developed somewhere in the cold box as the leak detector picks up gas reading from there. If i add refrigerant it lasts for a 6 months to a year but eventually leaks out.

I have ordered a new expansion valve and dryer and would like to replace the evaporator also but the oem part # 88501-60020 is only available from Japan for >300 USD. The denso parts do not appear to be available any longer. There are 4 different evaporators P#s LH/RH 90-93 and L/RH 93-97.

I am interested if the R134a evaporators from 93-97 will work in a R12 pre 97 system?

Also wondering if anyone has tried using a LHD evaporator in a RHD as suggested in the post below?

They would need to have removed the clocking boss on the evaporator flange or used an aftermarket evaporator that does not have boss.

Trying to decide if i should:
- pull current one and pressure test it
- order the oem replacement from japan
- attempt to use either 90-93 LHD aftermarket from rock auto
- or a 93-97 RHD aftermarket (from uk or aus)

Any thoughts or insights before i start ordering or taking things apart are appreciated.

Thanks,
Byron

I have no idea about using an LHD for a RHD car.
For $300, I'd probably opt for the new part and hope it lasts another 35 years. But I'd search like crazy to find the best deal on an OEM one. I understand parts are much cheaper in Japan, so perhaps trying to find someone on island to buy it and ship it to you?
I know hydraulic shops in my area (Central FL) that would (I think) be able to pressure test your evaporator and braze up any pinholes.

Let us know how it works out!
