Hello, I recently bought a FJ60 and I am looking to get it painted pretty quickly. It has a little rust behind the right rear tire, but it appears to be surface stuff at this point. I am looking for a good shop in the KC metro area that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, yet does good quality work the right way. I know, you get what you pay for... A quick internet search did not reveal much, apparently body shops are not too keen on the internet.

I am wanting to keep it the same color. 1.) To keep costs down 2.) To keep costs down.

Thanks for your help!

We need pics of the rig first off.

I saw a rig just off of 83rd I think. Is that yours off of mission and roe area?

Nope, wasn't me. I am still in Florida, where I purchased it. There are two or three I have seen in the area of Corinth Square, may have been one of those fellas.

That is all I have right now. The winch doesn't work, I am currently debating my wife about replacing it or removing it. The paint really is pretty good other than the roof and hood. Pretty bad oxidation.

Buddy of mine took a bumper to the maaco over off 87th and took the paint he wanted to use, and the guy was cheap and did good work.

If you're driving it back yourself, stop in auburn Alabama. Friend of mine is a painter and did a phenomenal job on my Tundra after a wreck. Probably priced right too

The shop name is tiger paint and body. The painter is named David. Can't remember the owners name off the top of my head. Just stupidly good at painting. I'll try and upload pics later.

Wow. Your Tundra looks perfect. Could not tell that it was wrecked.

Thanks, Kelly! The accident happened back in 2011, so it's been a few years.

Nice work... I didn't go near there and am still headed home... The Cruiser is doing great! 1300 miles so far. 16 mpg's. Stopped in Bolivar, Mo. tonight

Yep, ran like a champ. As for Pics... I'll probably start a small build thread in a few days.

Just a little follow up to my paint job hunt.

So I stopped by Santa Fe auto body yesterday for a quote, and just goes to show that customer service counts. It was a really weird experience. I later found out I had dealt with the owner, an older gentleman an what appeared to be a newer employee, as the owner never let him out of his sight. Anyways, they both walk out, take 3 seconds to walk around the Cruiser, and asks: "How much are you looking to spend?" I tell them I am just looking for a repaint in the same color and I'd like to keep it around $3500 (this was a low ball, as it kinda felt like Clark Griswold trying to buy four tires in the desert the old, "How much you got?" question). He said: "It'll be about $6000." He then begins to tell me about how he has to remove all of the trim, glass, door handles, lights... He then says he can never truly fix the rust and any rust he attempts to repair will be back in a year or less. I did my best to hold my tongue, as I thought it was a given that all the trim would be removed... That's part of getting a paint job. And then the comment about the rust, WTF? Way to sell your product and services. There is very minimal rust on this truck. One spot about the size of a half dollar behind the right rear tire. Surface rust, not even close to going through the panel. Anyways, I tell the guy, I was going to get a few more quotes before I chose a shop, and then asked him for a written quote on the job. I would expect this quote to come with some sort of breakdown of parts, paint, labor fees. Nope. He looks at me with a confused, like no one has ever asked him for a written quote, looks at the younger guy and says, "Write $6000.00 on that piece of paper and make him a copy. I get my "estimate" and ask him how long it is good for. He says, "As long as you can hang on to that paper." The guy wasn't rude, just indifferent. Didn't seem like he wanted my business.

Since I was in the area; I stopped by Maaco just down the road. I have seen Maaco do some really crap jobs, but I have also seen them do pretty good work too. Anyways, the guy was quite friendly and seemed eager for business, even though they were clearly busy. We went out to the Cruiser and he went panel by panel which door dings I wanted fixed, Which glass I wanted removed, which ones were okay to just be taped. He then wrote me a detailed quote which included panel by panel details and prices. After this, I mentioned my experience down the street. He laughed and said he worked there for nine years and the owner (Kip?) treats every new customer like that. Maaco quoted me $2900. He said they will mostly just mask items, but the more trim pieces I take off the better it will look. Which is just fine by me. Oh, and they warranty their paint job (not the rust repair) for 5 years.

I'll probably get one more quote somewhere in town, but Maaco will probably get my money. I hate to support a big chain over the little guy, but the little guy didn't earn my business.

That is the Maaco shop I was talking about. Great folks.

Talk to him about upgrading paint quality -- even bringing your own Matrix paint in for him to shoot.

Indeed. He said they used DuPont Cromax (IIRC). I don't know much about paints and their quality, but it seems people who know are pretty particular, kinda like they are about motor oil. I don't know anything about Matrix, what is the difference? I have used Overland Auto Paints to mix up some paint in spray cans, I was considering getting paint there, as I am kinda nervous about Maaco matching the color (not sure why, they seem pretty competent... just the - so far unwarranted - bad Maaco rep I guess). I have had good luck with Overland Auto Paints and matching colors.

Years ago I used that Maaco. They did good work. A little rust repair and a change of color. I didn't keep the car long enough to know if it stood the test of time.

For an additional bid, you might try Dales in downtown Olathe. The owners kids go to school with mine. I don't know him personally, but, he seems to be a stand up guy.

A "little" update… (Sorry, if you haven't noticed, I am kinda wordy) I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I have some daylight. I picked up my Cruiser today from Maaco. I have mixed feelings about it.

Quality: The quality of the work seems decent. There is a bit of orange peel on vertical surfaces, a speck of dust or two, but a good shine. There was one spot of rust repair, which seems to have been done well (time will tell on that one) and the three welded up holes on each frond doors look real good. Quality-wise, I am satisfied

Color: The color though, I am having a hard time dealing with. According to my trim tag, my paint code is 4E8, which is beige metallic. The only beige metallic offered in '85, but one of three offered over the 60's production run. Maaco claims they used the proper paint code, but stated the color was different since the paint is different today, from the paint and techniques used in 1985. Okay, I get that, but I still feel like regardless of paint types and techniques, colors can still be matched. They didn't paint the door jambs, so there is a clear difference between the new paint and the old paint. There is a definite rose color to the beige, perhaps one might call it mauve. I know there was a little bit of red in the original beige metallic color, but in my opinion, there is just too much red in the paint they used. For reference, I went to Overland auto paints in downtown OP and had them mix up a 4 oz. touch up can for $20.00 to see how their mix compared to Maaco's mix. Sure enough, Overland's mix was a hell of a lot better than Maaco's mix. This was more for my own satisfaction than anything else.

Customer service: They guy I dealt with, was a nice guy and seemed genuinely disappointed that I was not happy with the color. I also think he knew the color was wrong, but the manager wouldn't budge on it being the wrong color. He was adamant that it was the correct color, and came up with many excuses as to why the new paint was a different color than the color I brought in. (Don't get me wrong, I understand paint fades and ages over it's near 30 year life, and because of that, I compared old to new in areas that would be mostly protected from the elements over the vehicle's life.) In the end, the manager offered to respray the truck in any stock DuPont color or factory Toyota color I wanted for $400.00. I appreciate the effort/offer, but I will not give them more money to fix a color which I believe they just got wrong.

So, in conclusion, I got 20% off, ended up paying $2600 for all the prep, body work (about 15 small dings and one rust spot) and paint, for a decent warrantied paint job that I don't like. First world problems, right? I have been looking for the perfect nickname for my Cruiser, and today she earned the name: The Mauve Monster. My wife said the color is growing on her, it definitely looks like it came from the 1980's. I guess, buyer beware when it comes to Maaco. If I ever use them again, I will absolutely be taking my own paint. Like I said, pics coming tomorrow.

--Sam and the Mauve Monster.

Thanks for the update. Sorry that the paint didn't come out 100%. I completely understand and feel that if you pay for something, it should be done right. While $2600 may be on the lower end, at least getting the proper paint color shouldn't be an oversight.

Looking forward to the pics of the Mauve monster.

Pics, as promised:

I will say, it looks worse in pictures than in real life. For some reason the camera draws out the red.

This is where the rust was repaired, about a half dollar size chunk of surface rust just where the wheel arch ends behind where the mud flap is supposed to go. Looks good now, we will see how it holds up:

I wasn't shopping for Land Cruisers in 1985, so perhaps the new paint is dead nuts accurate. I shouldn't complain too much… You get what you pay for.

I like it! I gotta say, by just referencing the pics, it looks rather good. Again, that's pics only and not seeing it in person or knowing the door jams either.

You game for a meet and greet this Saturday at Martin city brewing company?
