While I'm updating this post.
Ol Rockford did great last weekend. We drove up to Overland Expo in Flagstaff. Can't believe it's my 9th year teaching classes there.
The 40 did so well that we had to pull off and wait for my buddy in his Defender 90 diesel several times. On the way home he even got a chance to jumpstart his younger brother FZJ80 that had a bad battery connection!
Then, the freeway was closed for the night at Cordes Junction so we hopped on dirt at Cordes and offroaded to Black Canyon City. Can't keep a good truck down!!
Rockford was a teaching aid in my "Tires" class as well as the "left foot braking" class. He did an admirable job of showing up the fancy traction control trucks.

Just been doing some maint and little things here and there. Pulled the swing out off and greased/cleaned it. Pulled the wiper motor apart to see what's up with it and rats got to it. We'll see if I can rewire it and make it work... Replaced a few bolts with fresh ones and cleaned him up!

I called Cruiser Outfitters needing a pinion seal... and I bought an OME suspension kit. Oops. Well worth it since we did a few hundred miles of dirt trails last weekend. It rides great! I can't imagine driving it with the clapped out Rancho Springs anymore.

Dude, where's the tent? No way you two sleep in that cab!We made out way back from Quartzsite, AZ to Phoenix on dirt over 4 days. It was a good time.

We're both from the circus and find the cab spacious.
The tent is a couple feet to the left in that shot.

Oh, okay then. Years ago, wife and I drove an early 70's Datsun pickup into north NM mountains. Spent the night in the bed with camper shell for cover. Middle of the summer, but it was the coldest, miserable night of 'sleep' I've ever had camping out. NEVER AGAIN!

With a shell as cover it "can" be warm, but in our 80 we put in a down comforter and our sleeping bags for extra warmth. We've had some cold nights, but never as bad as in a tent. Something about having a solid layer to cut the wind/rain I think.
Still, I bet the not so well sealed metal bed of a datsun and a shell made for a chilly night.

I have a 1973 Datsun pickup that my dad bought brand new, which I will get running again someday (hopefully) soon. There are two things that to me would make the Datsun bed rough to sleep in. I think the biggest would be that there is lots of air (cold) underneath the bed that you are trying to sleep in. The second problem would be all those corrugations in the bed floor might make things a bit uncomfortable.
