ok guys and gals...i have been working away on the piggy...over this long weekend i have had time to snap some pics and start this thread...i bought this 55 several years ago from fjben out in greely co...it has waited patiently for its turn in the shop...had to finish jakes 40...well not finish but get it close...as i have discovered you never really finish

here are the first pics of the build...working on the front end...fender repair was really not all that difficult...just time consuming...i made my own patches....had to repair about 50 hail dents in the hood...also not hard but again time consuming....i have one section of bad floor/mount to deal with...pics when i get to it...

gonna pull the motor and clean up the engine bay and wiring...i will also be freshening up the engine...

i am sure i will have many questions as i proceed as this is my first pig build....

enjoy the pics!

Osagecruiser...I look forward to the continuation of your thread here. It looks to be a fun one and instructional as well. What are the major patch areas to come?

oh just the usual pig patches...drivers side floor/body mount area....rocker areas under each side....rear quarter panels/corners both sides...i also have some additonal hail damage to address all along the passenger side....once the front section is complete fenders hood and other small parts i will be pulling the engine and rebuilding the front axel...at least thats the plan for now...

welding

How are you welding in the patches, MIG or TIG? I have some work to do on my 40 and am hoping I can use my wire feed to do the welding..... Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Kelly

Wire feed will be fine, as long as your settings are right and you know what you're doing. Practice is always a good thing though!

i stich weld in the patches using a wire feed welder...120v..inexpensive model...i continue tacking until i have a continuos bead...grind...skim coat of kitty hair...skim coat of light weight filler and primer...i will post up somemore photos this evening....oh when tack welding don't get the metal too hot...it will warp

as mentioned in the previous post...spot weld and kitty hair....i love this stuff...it is a long stranded fiberglass filler...hard as nails....the first pic is the lower patch with kitty hair in place and ready for the sander...the second pic is the rust hole that used to house the turn signal...patch and kitty hair in place....the final shot is of the backside of the lower fender patch....still a little ugly but taking shape....also, please not that all the patch panels were made using a vice...body hammers...pipe...and grinder...no special metal working tools were used
