ive been told by several old school wheelers and gearheads alike that leaving a battery sitting on a shop floor causes it to discharge....
is this true and does it apply to sealed batteries such as the optima series?
i believe it does on much older batteries but not the new ones.but then again im not putting one on the ground to find out:hillbilly:

I remember talking to a guy many years ago that was an engineer and rep for Exide batteries. He laughed about that topic, said it was an urban legend, nothing but BS. Why would sitting on a concrete floor have any effect on it? Think about it...

back when the the old battery CASES were made of halite (sp)?----halite was plastic before plastic was plastic ya dig. Ok back on track back when the cases were madeof halite the battery would drain down. New batteries you dont have a thing to worry about.

I cannot seem to remember if the halite was conductive and the moisture in the concrete created an enviroment for EMF (electromagnetic force).

I dont know really just thinking back too far

thanks thats what i was getting at.was to much work to say:D

bakelite I think is what im thinking of....hell im only 27 I wasnt around in the '30s and '40s to remember these names.

anyway longstory short yes they used to drain down(becase of the material used bakelite) no they dont anymore

sounds like a show for that mythbusters on discovery channel

Bakelite makes more sense, 'cause the mineral Halite is the naturally occuring form of NaCl( common salt.) Cheers.
